Agree 100%....And, if you buy a fine quality automatic from Omega, Tag, Ulysse Nardin(my personal favorite)....you can make almost all of your money back upon resale...

As a watch purist, all my watches must be autos, no quartz, no Kenetic and no nonsense.

You can get a good auto movement like their 7S26 and 7S36 from Seiko, Invicta, Orient for under $100. Omega and Rolex movements are off the shelf Swiss ETA or Valjoux movements that don't cost more than $200, you just pay for the prestige of the brand and the name.

My picks are;

High End:
Sinn / Bell&Ross
Doxa
Kolbold
Grand Seiko

Daily beaters:
Seiko
Orient
Citizen
Invicta
Poljot
Tissot
O&W

Are you on Timezone, Ed??

I love being on that forum, except when looking at OTHER peoples' A. Langes and Pateks!!

I agree with you except for the 'off the shelf' movt part. Rolex makes their own movements, like Seiko, except for their chronographs, I believe, which are Valjoux. Also, ETA movts come in different grades, the cheapest movts going to Swatch and the mid-high end movts to Omega...the finishing and accuracy can vary greatly depending on what grade it is.

I'm not sure he's looking for a watch in Grand Seiko territory, just going by the ESQs he's considering. Sinn is a very good watch for the $$....I love their 756 Diapal...

Look at Oris, too....

Great quality in the same general price range as ESQ...

I've always liked the Sinn's as well. Never got around to buying one, but have heard great things about them.

I used to browse the TimeZone forums a few years back when I was really into watches. Fortunately the watch-collecting madness stopped before I purchased a tourbillon or some other insanely expensive watch.

Has anyone seen, tried, or own the new Seiko Springdrive watches? They look pretty neat to me or am I missing something? http://www.seikospringdrive.com Do you think this is a quality movement?

You guys have got me wanting a new watch too, and now the hunt begins! lol

Thanks,

Mike

I just buy a $15.00 watch from Walmart. When it breaks I just throw it away and buy a new one. I get 3 to 4 years from a Walmart watch.

They are very nice movements. I believe they use a different type of escapement than regular autos, somehow dealing with a spring...

People I've talked to who have one say they are very, very accurate(almost quartzlike) and it is quite mesmerizing to see the second hand literally sweep(no little incremental 'steps', just a fluid motion)...

I can only wish... I have 2 expensive hobbies, cars that go fast and detailing. If I sold my 35th Anniversary SS I could maybe buy a Rolex... maybe 2. If a Rolex can give me the adrenaline rush my Camaro does when I lift the front tires... Id be all over it.

Cool, thx for the reply. That's what I've been reading about the SDs, that they are pretty neat to see in action, but I didn't realize they were going for so much $. hehe

While we're all on the whole watch subject, does anyone have some good sources for purchasing nice watches online? It seems TimeZone refrains from this bigtime, and it's very hush hush there. Where are the better places to buy online? I have bought from ClassyBrand in the past and they were good, but I think I've found at least 1-2 more that I'm strongly considering buying my wife a watch from for a Christmas gift.

Thanks,

Mike

Here are a few reputable sellers:
www.alanfurman.com
www.watchbuys.com(the only U.S. authorized Sinn dealer)
www.watchesplanet.com

Good luck!
