Setting Up A Home Network

Well I finally got around to fixing the year old computer we just replaced...I have everything set up and working find however since it is now located on the main floor there is no internet connection. I do have a wireless network setup in the house for my laptop.

To connect the desktop to the wireless network do I need something like this card for the desktop:

How would I go about installing the card? Thanks for the help!!

Yes, that Linksys card will work just fine and they are pretty easy to set-up, especially if you're running XP.

There will be instructions with the card that will walk you through the set-up. If you run into any problems just post back (be sure and let us know what OS you're running).

Please make sure to protect the wireless access point with some sort of encryption. I'm amazed at the number of home networks that are wide open.

Also, do you have a computer physically (with a wire, instead of wirelessly) connected to the router? You'll need it if you want to make any major changes to the router settings.

good luck, let me/us know if you have any more questions! I'm a bit of a computer geek myself

installation of the card is simple.

open the case
find an open PCI slot (bottom left of the board, about 4 inch white slots)

slide it in there and screw it down to the case with the screws

start up

install software

that's it
