What cold medicine, supplements, or remedies do you use?

With the weather fluctuating up and down the last couple weeks in South Jersey I'm starting to develop cold symptoms. I've tried many things in the past ex. Nyquil, Zicam Swabs, Mucinex, Vicks Rub, Aireborne, and Ecinachea but nothings seems to help shorten the duration of my colds. What do you guys use to deal with your colds? Last year I read some good things about an herbal supplement (Edelberry I think) but never got a chance to try it. Any suggestions?

I take two vitamin C's each day, and when I feel a cold coming on I load up on ecinachea which seems to really help. In the last year I have also tried taking Airborne which also seemed to help.

When you feel a cold coming on some extra sleep and a lot of fluids might also help.

Thanks guys for your input. That food poisoning must be rough. Get well soon imacarnut. Eliot I think I'm gonna try the vitamin C. I was thinking of using Ester C, have you tried it? What brand of vitamin C and Ecinachea do you use? I agree plenty of rest and fluids needs to be a part of my regimen.

Alka-Seltzer PLus was recommended to me a few years back and its the best stuff I've ever taken for colds/flu. You can feel it working within 15-20 minutes. Really good stuff. As far as Ester-C, I try a lot of supplements and was never impressed with it. It just didn't feel right in my body. Regular C is cheap, time-tested and works fine. The Vitamin C foundation also doesn't recommend it. http://www.vitamincfoundation.org/esterc.htm

I usually just buy what they have at Wal-Mart...... I think the name is Spring Valley, and I take two 1000mg capsules a day (one in the morning and one at night).

When I do get a cold, and thankfully that doesn't happen very much anymore, I also like the Alka-Seltzer Plus. It doesn't seem to make you as drowsy as some of the other stuff sold OTC.

Here's another vote for Alka-Seltzer medicine. It really is good stuff.

I am just getting over a cold/allergies. After a few days of coughing and sneezing, stuffy nose = not ebing able to sleep for more than and hour or so at a time, I was flat out exhausted and had to bang in sick to work on Friday. I am a firm believer that rest does a body good.

That said, I tried for the second time, Tylenol sore throat and cough liquid (Night-time). It's a bluish color and be prepared if you take it. within the hour you will be out like a light! It's weird because you never feel yourself getting tired. You feel your throat feels great, no coughing and then bam.....out cold! I woke up on Saturday after a solid 7-8hrs of sleep feeling like a new man. Last time I used it was last year or the year before. Worked like a charm then too!

I am like you as well in that I tend to hold onto cold for a looooooooooooooooong time. When I get the flu it's usually a day of feeling ehhhhh, 1 day of "I wanna die", and the next day is a "I wanna die/maybe I can eat something now" day. After that bad day or so I recover quickly. I know some people have the flue for a week plus, but I tend to get rid of that quicker. It's colds that stay with me like ......well a cold I guess.

I supplement daily with a quality multivitamin, fish oil, glucosamine and chondroiton and green tea. To get through cold season I usually rely on Dayquil and Nyquil. Dayquil has done a pretty bang up job of helping me through the work day and Nyquil knocks me out for the count at night. I do try to avoid taking the meds if I can help it, but when I need them, they do their job.
