We were on our way home, in the left lane and we were slowing down for stopped traffic in the left lane when I looked in my rear view mirror and realized the Honda behind us wasn't going to be able to stop. Before I could even say anything to my son so he could brace himself, she hit us and knocked us into a small truck in front of us.
We seem to be fine and so did everyone else, plus at least she had insurance and got a ticket for following too closely so the insurance payoff should be a slam-dunk.
His Cavalier is definitely totalled though.

Any thoughts on a replacement for him?

We both feel fine now, even went running earlier this evening. Still, you never know. My son said it felt like getting hit from behind by a linebacker.

Insurance companies love to hurry you up, but don't let that bother you. Some symptoms take some time to show up. When I was rear-ended long ago, I felt mostly fine until I tried to sleep that night. I've had other injuries that I didn't realize the full consequences of until some time later, especially how easily they can cause life-long arthiritis. Get thoroughly checked out and give some time for any problems to make some kind of appearance.

Paradigm and Velobard are right on in saying to go to your doctor to both get checked out. I was a passenger in a car that was rear ended 13 years ago and I initially felt fine but the next day had a very sore neck. Went right to the doctor and got checked out and was told I had mild whiplash. Don't sign anything, I know we don't have to tell you as you're one smart man but hey we care about you guys!
