Yikes. I didn't realize you were still on ME . . .
Heh heh, see what I meant when I called my current system a dinosaur...and just think, my wife wants it because it's so much better than the Gateway *she's* using when not on her notebood For all the stuff we spend $ on, the computers are at the bottom of the barrel.

I appreciate all the info and also that you folks dumbed down the explanations enough for me to follow (well, at least most of it). Thanks to everyone who responded.

I feel miles ahead of where I was when I first started this thread, time for me to do some research and get the ball rolling.

toyemp- Your dual monitor setup has me thinking expensive thoughts

Yeah, just remember that there are always hidden costs too! When I bought the two monitors, I completely forgot about desk space -- I ended up having to buy a new desk too.

toyemp- I wouldn't mind a reason for some new home office furniture

Been looking into Eizo, LaCie, and NEC monitors (leaning towards Eizo)...they make LCD look pretty attractive but I don't see a way to work the trade-off between good display of photos/graphics/text and good display of video/etc. I'm starting to wonder what I'll notice and what I won't...I'd hate to make a mistake in that price range.

I've been running on a 21" Mitsubishi CRT monitor for 5 years now, which gives off a tremendous amount of heat (MORE THAN MY 500W CPU!). I recently decided to purchase the Dell 2407WFP which is a widescreen.

From my monitor experience, you can NEVER go wrong with a Samsung flat panel monitor. They never get any burnt pixels in the long run and they last very long. Very costly though.

Viewsonic isn't a bad monitor either. Viewsonic, Dell, and Samsung are probably the top 3 on the list.

What's cool is that I bought my XPS 700 w/ 2407WFP monitor for $1200 after ridiculous discounts (35% off, 15% off, 2% off, $50 coupon). Without discounts it would have been $2000.

However, Dell is having HUGE delays with these systems. Ordered it on July 4th and ETA is August 15. To make up for it they are offering us an upgrade from Pentium D to the new Pentium Core 2 Duo, which is a huge plus. Still, these delays are ridiculous.

Sorry for the rant.

Good luck on your monitor buy!

So far the Eizo still seems like my first choice but I'm open to suggestions (gotta look into the Samsungs).

tustah- A considerable delay won't work for me this time. Heh heh, and I'm the guy who waited three months for my preferred floorjack

Interesting about the heat your Mitsu puts out, my current ViewSonic CRT doesn't put off much heat at all

tomstin- Thanks for those links. People are making this pretty easy for me, which I truly appreciate. Not that I'm above doing some searches, but still I somehow missed the seemingly obvious PCWorld ones.

Go with the dell widescreen. With coupons you can find @ www.fatwallet.com you can get them very cheaply. We do this at the computer store and order about 15 of them then thro them on ebay for *under* msrp.
