Carfax does not look kindly on these types of requests and have threatened legal action against another board I go to.

Just thought I'd give you a heads up on that.

Ditto. I've heard recently about people having their accounts pulled for running VINs that have appeared on forums.

I understand the desire for a company to make a buck, but I think that vehicle histories should be publicly accessible information. It seems consumer rights are less important than corporate or even personal financial gain.

If I understand correctly, Carfax uses publicly available information from multiple sources. You're just paying for the convenience of getting the info easily from a single source.
