Music buffs.... looking for band recommendations

I consider myself pretty well versed in the style of music that I like.... hard rock and heavy metal. Everything from Disturbed to Metallica, Mudvayne to NonPoint, Fuel to Seether, Rush to Rage, SlipKnot to Godsmack... Zep to Silverchair. you get the idea. Well today I was listening to one of my all time favorites, Faith No More and their stellar "Epic." I love the entire song, especially since I play the bass guitar myself, and the bass guitar on pretty much any FNM song is to die for. However, when the end of the song comes up and the beautiful piano piece starts playing, I am stricken (sp?) emotionally in a very powerful way... a way that is different from the excitement I get from hearing the perfect riff being played at full volume.

So, now to the point. I am looking for some new music. Problem is, I don't really know the genre or style or techical term for it. I LOVE tribal drum beats, a la lots of Godsmack songs, and I love piano and orchestral accompaniments, a la Metallica's S&M album. Another song that comes to mind that touches on this is Shimmer by Fuel, but only at the beginning. Dream Theater incorporates a lot of this as well, but I'm very familiar with most of their songs.

Is there a style of music out there that consists of mostly drum/percussion beats, with some orchaestral arrangements and piano bits thrown in? I don't care if there are vocals or not, but this type of arrangement is very moving to me. I'm not looking for classical music, as I'm also quite familiar with a lot of that as well.

I dabbled in a bit of Dead Can Dance, but that was just a little out there for me. I'd still like to keep the music upbeat and powerful... think soundtrack to Blackhawk Down. Anyone got anything?

If anyone has the Godsmack DVD, where Sully and the drummer have the dual trapsets on stage and just go off for several minutes... that's on the right track.

I'm not familar enough with the music genre you listen to to make any useful suggestions; however, I stumbled across this web page a while back that might be of some help: http://www.pandora.com/

You give Pandora a rough idea of what you like, and it starts playing similar stuff from other artists. You give it a thumbs-up or -down rating, and it Pandora uses that information to tweak your "channel" settings to try to play stuff that you like. It's a good way to get introduced to new songs and groups.

Have you any of these bands: Tool, Nickelback, APC, Alice in Chains, Dream Theater, Creed. Look into Jazz/Fusion style awesome musicians: Allan Holdsworth, Michael Landau, Jing Chi, Simon Phillips, Virgil Dontai.

I am and have always been into hard-er rock and metal, so I can relate to most of the bands you like. I grew up on a steady diet of Tallica, and another metalhead was born. It actually influenced me to play guitar, and I'm now learning some bass too. Anyhow, for tribal, have you tried Sepultura or Soulfly? That is the epitomy of tribal-styled metal, so to speak. Actually, it is Brazilian....where those guys are from. The album *Roots* from Sepultura is classic, I would start there.

Have you checked out older Fear Factory? Lacuna Coil, God Forbid,...stuff like that...?

I'm quite familiar with most of the bands listed here, except Soulfly. I guess I should have specified that I'm not necessarily looking to stay with the metal genre... I just don't want something that's going to put me to sleep.

I'll check out the metropolis label, and Pandora/Live Plasma sounds like a cool deal. Thanks.

BTW, I just saw Lacuna Coil has a new album out. Stay tuned for a new Breaking Benjamin and Stone Sour first week of August

Another BTW, for those of you who also may be into the tribal drum/bongo thing, check out Ill Nino. They have some great beats as well, and don't forget NonPoint... one of my favorites.

The older Fear Factory is a bit too.... industrial for me, although I do still enjoy their music.

Sh!t I was going to mention Ill Nino for you LOL. They rule, huge following down here in South Florida (since Ill Nino and Nonpoint are local bands). Their last cd Confessions was just amazing. One of their old songs "Liar" seems to be exactly what you were talking about. I love they way they mix latin drums, bongo's etc with hard rock.

Since you mentioned piano, A Static Lullaby has a cool song with a deep organ type piano background, think it's called "Calmer Then You Are"

Want a mean *** chick, Otep - Battle Ready , get's you pumped when wakeboarding lol.

I like me some System of a Down for a little-bit-of-everything music. Evanescence also pulls in the piano and a few unusual instruments.

has to be Wolfmother from Australia.

Think Deep Purple/Ozzy/Led Zep/Stooges ...
A little Metal, a little punk, all with a 70's classic rock mentality.

You know what you might like? John Coltrane. Go to http://www.allmusic.com . If you register (I never get any nagmail from them), you can listen to snippets from tracks. Go to John Coltrane and listen to the first 30 seconds or so of A Love Supreme. If you like it, there's some new music to try; and if you don't, there went a minute of your life. Coltrane was exploring some pretty amazing places back then.
