I have always used and liked Dell but if there is something that is better bang for the buck I would consider it. I even looked in MACs but most of the software I use can only be used on a PC, such as AutoCAD.

Bob, if you're just doing word processing, spreadsheets, Autocad, etc. IMO it's easier to stick with a Dell/HP and just configure the PC to your liking from their website.

I have a friend that will build me one but it might be easier to just buy one with a warranty and stuff. This is the one I was looking at: http://www.dell.com/content/products...=19&l=en&s=dhs

I'm typing away on a Dell XPS notebook. I have had to call tech on it once, and guess what? Zero wait! When you buy certain systems, you get an 'express service code' - no sitting on hold for an hour. Not sure if they do it just on XPS or on other model lines, but worth whatever it costs.
This is my third Dell and I buy Dells for my staff (4 other Dells in here). I always see what's new / better/ etc. and always come back to Dell. Why? Best combination of hardware / software for the money w/o building a system from scratch. Cheapest? no. Best? no. But I think they're a good balance for what I do.

If you need a $900 desktop (graphics, games, etc) then building one yourself is probaby the better way to go.

Dell, eMachines, Compaq/HP
I like the build it yourself route, personally. No proprietary garbage to deal with
