Crazy Sky Dive
I was just watching a Boards of Canada video online and they had the strangest footage in it. A guy performing what looked like a sky dive from space. Turns out it was just that. Capt. Joseph Kittinger in 1960 jumped from a balloon at 102,800 feet and freefell for 4.5 minutes at speeds up to 614 mph (almost the speed of sound)!!! This is one of the absolute craziest things I have ever seen, and I had NEVER heard of it before. Wow.
Here's a link to some video.

Woo Hoo! That was cool.
If you study the physics it shouldn’t be all that crazy but in the real world it took awfully big cajones to trust his butt to a sliderule and a sixties vintage spacesuit.
PC.

I'd heard about this jump before be had no idea there was video of it. It's a bit before helmet cams really hit the scene. I don't hear about too many folks trying to beat this one.

I think they had a separate balloon to haul his balls up to that altitude. He must have some big ones to jump out of that thing.

Same here lol. Jumping out of a plane is nutz, I couldn't imagine jumping out of a ballon that high. Wasn't that basically the edge of where earth/space meet, or do you knwo what the height is (like when a space shuttle finally reaches space?)

The internationally agreed upon boundary, the Karman line, is 100km (62mi) high.
