I learned my lesson long ago about not involving the police. Elderly couple (60+) rear ended my car while i was stopped at a light. Old guy asks if we can NOT involve insurance companies and cops I said fine, didn't look like more that $500 damage to my rear bumper.
When it came time to get the money, i never got a call back (it was a legit #), letters were returned unopened ( I knew i had the right address because I drove by and saw his car in the drive). This is what I got for my willingness to cooperate..........NEVER AGAIN. Now it's only about cops and insurance companies UNLESS they can plunk down $5K cash and trust me to turn the change.

well, like I said, I stopped by & talked to the desk officer at the West Hollywood Sherriff's department, since they were only a few miles down the road. He told me they wouldn't have sent someone out unless there were injuries.
Update: talked to the guy handling the claim for my insurance company. Said he talked to the girl & that she said she was just a WITNESS. Yea, right. If she was just a witness, she wouldn't have been so hostile toward me & the other guy. Plus, when I asked them whose car hit mine, she said "well, I did, but it was HIS fault- HE caused it."
She's really layin it on thick. Keep diggin that hole, baby...

Sry for your car, just be glad it wasn't like my situation where a drunk driver totaled my truck (in 7 thousand dollars in damage, truck’s blue book is 5 thousand) because he was pissed off at the world. He didn't have insurance and I didn't have full comp but I did have uninsuranced driver insurance but I soon found out it was for medical. The drunk driver is broke, does not work so I have to pay to get my truck fix my self.

Get an attorney and take him to claims court. Even if he is broke, if he ever works you might be able to get his tax refunds. They might be able to place a garnishment on his wages, and maybe you can even get a lien on any assets he has until your debts are repaid. It would at least be worth talking to an attorney, because laws vary from state to state.

An Autopian Scorned... His Final Fury
Well, yesterday, my insurance company said they couldn't do anything more... That neither the older gentlman nor the girl were answering calls or returning messages, & that my best bet was to file a hit & run report with the police & take her to small claims court. Of course, this assumes we can track her down.
I really don't know if it's worth the time, trouble, & expense... which is probably what she's counting on, I'm sure. That would be one prime motivation... to see her go down in flames, & learn a little lesson about personal responsibility. I probably wouldn't be so hell-bent on exacting revenge is she had been a little less nasty, hostile, & condescending.
Seems there's precious little incentive to be a decent person any more...
no more Mr. Nice Guy... it's a definite character flaw in America today.
