They always have to make a face!

I felt like I was trying to photograph an obnoxious little kid or something today when I was testing out my new camera and tripod. My dog wasn't being very cooperative. It took me about a dozen shots to get a decent one. Here's the first one:

.

But the main thing I wanted to try out on my camera was the zoom. It's a Canon Powershot S2 IS, with 12X optical zoom and 4X digital. Since the dog walked away during the photoshoot, I figured it was a good time to try out the zoom.

No zoom applied:

12X optical:

Full 48X:

The zoom on this camera is pretty impressive. I was touching the camera when taking the full zoom shot, which may explain the bit of blur in the shot, but I can't imagine what it would look like without a tripod. It probably wouldn't even be discernable.

I finally got a shot with the dog looking at (or close to) the camera.

Wait.. isn't the IS supposed to mean Image-Stabilization?

Yes, I think the reason the closeup of the dog isn't as clear is because he was using the digital zoom. I'm not sure about Canon cameras, but on my FinePix S5100 when on the highest JPEG setting you couldn't use digital zoom, only on the lower settings. All digital zoom is cropping, and from what I've read about it, it should usually be left off. It greatly compromises the picture, as you see above.

*edit* Heres a good article on optical zoom vs. digital zoom...

Heh heh, yeah, good pics! Glad you're enjoying the camera (don't you dare tease me about still not having a digital ).

Yeah, getting dogs to cooperate sure isn't easy!

Yes, it stands for Image Stabilization, but I agree with Johnny, I think the digital zoom is really the reason for the blur. Any movement of the camera at 48X zoom is going to be exaggerated a ton, so even with the IS, I don't expect crystal clarity. I'll rarely use the full digital zoom though...this was just a test to see what the capability of the camera is.

Very nice photos Maxy, what camera did you get? Mmm what is with the mark on the right front wheel well in photo #5? Is that why your doggie looks sad?
