I've tried opera, but I had issues with embedded media.

I use FF all the time. When I first started using it over a year ago, 1 in 100 pages I would have to open IE for. Now though, I don't think I've opened IE in 6 months. Everything about it is superior to IE.
Back when I was trying to get out of IE, I tried Opera and a couple others as well...Firefox won easily for me and I haven't looked back.

I highly recommend Thunderbird as an e-mail client, too.

yes it does have tabs but will not set them up the way I need them. I generally have at least 8-10 tabs open in one window, side by side under the url window. at work I may have 20 open for my tasks that require internal or external web based programs. my co-workers and I have tried Firefox and it is ok but it needs to more * tab fiendly* for * me * hey anything beats IE

Here is an image of my desktop with 9 tabs right below the URL just as you describe. Maybe you haven't tried the latest version of Firefox, it is up to 1.5.
Can you really call Maxthon a browser? If I am not mistaken, isn't it just a shell for IE? Does it eliminate all the vulnerabilities and problems with IE?
Speaking of IE, has anyone seen the beta 2 of IE 7?? I downloaded it yesterday to give it a try and removed it a few minutes later. It looks pretty good but, still too many bugs for me. Unfortunately, there are still things I need to use IE for. By the way, IE7 will only run on XP with SP2. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/default.mspx
