Its definately big business...I live on the far east county line of city with 150,000 people....within 5 minutes of me there is a Menards, Lowes, and Home Depot directly across the street. 10 minutes directly North there is another Menards and another Home Depot that are separated by only a Petco and a restaurant. ALL of which seemed to be pretty packed at any given time.
For those that don't live up here...Menards is a chain of about 200 stores spread across 10 states in the upper-midwest. Every bit as big as a Lowes or HD, plus they have a full on lumber yard.

Probably don't have quite the tool selection, but good prices, good selection on other things, and prople are fairly helpful-or will find someone who is.
And anyone ever notice that HD tends to hire young, cute checkout girls? Go to a Lowe's and HD that are across the street from each other and I can guarantee that HD has better looking checkers (those who have not been replaced by the UScan).

That is my feeling exactly. As a contractor I go to HD for quick things like I would a 7-11 conveinence store. For big stuff contractors still count on the builders supply lumber yards. No contractor wants to go and pick up 50 2X4's and wait in line trying to get out of the store. Lowes is the worse for a contractor. The lines they carry are ment for a homeowner. I do shop a Lowes if I am lookinf for a fixture, or some plumbing or elecrtical supplies. They have a better layout and selection. Do not expect good sound advice from a box store, go to a real supply store if you an advice you can count on.

I love Lowe's cleanliness and open isles, but they usually only have the Service Desk and one other lane open to check out. If they ever fix that bottleneck, I'll be at Lowe's all the time.

The local lumber yard is booming as far as lumber sales. Plus you usually can not beat lumber yard lumber prices. Plus, most people that work in lumbr yards know there stuff because they have been in the building business for years.

The Lowes right by my house has outsourced all the cashier jobs to India...EVERYTIME I go there, at least 1 of the 3 Indian guys are at the only register open. Which is fine by the way, don't want to send the wrong impression....its just not as good as hot young girls

was in the store. I would say do you carry widgets? Sorry no we don't.
Then after I found them on my own and showed them to the same person they
would say "I had no idea we carried those".
After many such experiences I gave up asking. I just look on my own now.
At that time I was buying for a commercial account .
Of course this scenario could apply to any store.

Builder's Square wasn't bad. Home Shithole (excuse my language) is terrible. A big dirty mess. They are many times cheaper than Lowe's, which I haven't found to be very low on pricing at all.
I really like the smaller local stores, and I have found that they can order in almost anything. And I don't mind spending a little extra money if I'm going to be supporting local business, as long as they're helpful.
