Comcast.... :angry

I get home on Wednesday and open up IE. 404 time after time. I checked my modem and only 2 lights were on instead of 4. I then turned on my TV and nothing but snow. I called Comcast to let them know and they said the soonest they could have someone out was Sunday evening! Huh? My introductory rate for broadband is over so my cable and high speed internet bill is now $132 a month, or $1608 per year. I certainly expect better service than I am getting when I have a problem.

Their excuse? A lot of people got HD TVs for Christmas so they have a lot of installs to do. So? Why to new customers get priority over current customers? That is like a restaurant getting your order wrong and then saying they won't fix the problem until they make everyone else's order. It isn't acceptable for a $5 value meal, it certainly is not acceptable for a $132 a month cable and internet bill.

I am now looking into satellite for my TV and wireless internet. The only problem is my son has wireless internet and couldn't get a clean signal where I live. I don't want to go to DSL because a 1.5 mbps connection is going to seem very slow compared to my current 6 mbps connection.

Anyone else make the complete break from cable? Any other good options?

All I want to say is I hate the cable companies. What they do is ridiculous and I'm glad to see you are switching.

Oh, the other great thing about Comcast (or the phone co.) is when they tell you that they aren't having any problems in their system, it must be your modem/computer/interior wiring/etc., and then you go on a wild goose chase for hours/days, when it always IS their problem.

Scott, make sure they give you a credit for the days/hours that your service is out. I have Directv for tv, and been nothing but happy with the service. I do have Adelphia for my internet, and no major problems to speak of (it was the only broadband available in my area). I looked into satellite internet, (direcway, if i remember correctly) but it was real expensive.

Good for me = Stream is FAST as all get out and I haven't had an outage that I can remember that lasted more than about 30 minutes.

Bad = I pay $57 dollars a month to Comcast.

I'll say this much - we had Pacbell DSL and then Comcast in California, we moved to Canada and got Bell Canada/Sympatico first then switched to Rogers. They all suck. It's sad, but the best you can do is find the one that sucks the least and hope they don't screw you.

Hmmm...what a surprise Around here, Comcast has a contractor do the internet "repairs"...after the second time they were out, telling me (phone support) it was my modem, my wiring, etc., I talked about it with the contractor (it was working when he got there) and asked him point blank whether he thought the problem was in my house and his answer was "no, their {Comcast's} network is old, and frankly, it's falling apart, and instead of fixing it, all we hear about is the rollout of VoIP". When I complained about the waste of my time, and the money they were paying his company to chase phantom problems, he said "it's cheaper than upgrading the network". Anyway...

They said they will credit me but big deal? What about supplying me with alternate ways to entertain myself while both cable and internet are out? And even worse, it is obviously a problem at the box since both are out. How hard is it to send a truck by to spend 10 minutes finding the problem? Last time it was out, someone had tapped into my cable. If that is the case this time, I am calling the cops immediately and I expect the tech to ping the line to see where it is going and I am going to press charges.

Shoot, Scott, that just reminded me about my friend who lives in a 3-family house, one of the apartments moved out, and my friend's cable goes out one day, just like yours. So she happens to ask the new people if their cable is out too, and they say "no, we just got ours installed today!". Yes, you guessed it, they disconnected hers and hooked it up to the new neighbors...then told her they couldn't come back for a week to fix it! Gotta love Comcast!

Verizon is rolling out FIOS (fibrt optic tv/internet) around here. It is actually faster than Comcast's cable internet, and is cheaper. Check with Verizon to see if they are setting up FIOS in your area.
