Make sure to get a receipt. I stay away from swap meets after seeing some "real" stuff next to some "fake" stuff. You just don't know what you're getting from those places and why you can get it for such a good price. Bottom line is you need to be able to prove where you got it from to keep you're freedom and having a receipt surely helps that.

Back to your question. Napster, really.

That's a good point. But I don't believe the BS that Apple only makes a few cents on each song...that's just what they feed the public to justify [eventually] charging more.

Exactly !!!

Like how Home Depot came in with low prices, drove everyone outta business, now they are sometimes more expensive than most places.

Or when self serve gas was cheaper than full serve, now its all one price, the full serve price, but i have to pump my own friggen gas !

But Apple is *more* expensive than the others.

Check out free downloads with Binary Newsgroups. Most ISP's offer newsgroups with regular internet srvice. Some ISP's have good news services, some not. A good explanation of it all is Slyck's Guide to The Newsgroups The nice thing about newsgroups is there's new stuff posted every day by people all around the globe. And the quality of MP3's is generally good as newsgroup posters are usually computer savvy.

To see what's available check out alt.binaries.nl (Click on a group to see the lastest postings.)

Full list of MP3 groups available at Astraweb

Some of my favorites:
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1970s
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1980s
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.classic-rock
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.prog (progressive rock)

You'll need a binary news program to DL and decode the postings. There's many to choose from but I use Grabit. It's free, does a good job and is fairly simple to setup and use. Probably the best is Newsleecher. It's $30 but has alot of features and a smooth interface. If your ISP doesn't have a good news service (good retention and completeness of postings) you'll need to find a paid news service. The Slyck guide has a good listing of paid news services with user reviews.

Well, after reading the posts, I decided that Limewire and other P2P's have the legal right to operate the site but that users can still be held possibly liable for downloading and then burning the tracks, so I bailed on those type of "free and legal" sites and settled on MusicMatch for now. The full access download fee is 5 bucks a month and purchase for burning 99 cents each or 6.99-9.99 an album. Upgrading to the Jukebox Plus certainly gives better download and burner features. The burner will convert MP3 to .wav or .wav to MP3 easily. My daughter's CD deck in her car is MP3 capable and burning in this format lets you put about 10 albums on a 700MB CD. The downloads are very clear and crisp and there is an option to buy DFX for 19.99 (one time fee) for sound enhancement. You can try it out for free, which I did, and what a difference in sound! It is capable of enhancement to tracks that you can then burn to CD. I'm not all that savvy with these music sites and have been spending a chunk of time learning all this from scratch, but I was totally blown away by that DFX sound enhancement and I already have JBL speakers on my computer and a Bose system for music and home theater. It also has the option of ordering monthly allowances in ten dollar increments, so I gave my daughter a 10 dollar a month allowance along with this MP3 player for Christmas (MusicMatch allows up to 5 computers to use one account) and she promptly downloaded and album by a band called Death Cab for Cutie, of all things! I couldn't help but remark on the name of the band and she promptly pointed to my downloads of Led Zepplin, that sounded just as bizarre to her. The generation gap has now come full circle in my life!

Just wanted to add the Newsleecher program I mentioned above is actually $30 per year(!)....forget that. (unless you can afford it of course) The binary newsgroups are a good way to go. Fairly simple to setup, free and no one is tracking your DL's. A couple programs; Binary News Reaper (free) has alot of fans, but I found it complex to use. Xnews is another good free one many people like, a bit more difficult to setup than Grabit

To see what's available music-wise go to http://audiofind.com/ and search for a group/artist or click on one of the featured newsgroups.

Allofmp3.com : It's a Russian based site that allows you to choose the type of encoding and bitrate. The cost is based on Mb downloaded .02 (USD)/Mb (although I think they mean MB). A typical cd encoded in mp3 format at 192 Kbps is about $2.00.

You download a piece of software to automate the download process. The website can be accessed from anywhere to search music. They will save any selections you make until you turn the download manager on the next time.

I know several people who have used this system over the last couple of years and have been pleased with service and ease of the system.

do you know if I could somehow get these on my ipod? I mean I have downloaded stuff on limewire, put it in my itunes library, and it converts it to the apple format and uploads to my ipod with no issues. would this be any different?

If it sounds to good to be true....... I'm sure it's more difficult to catch up to you but it's no different from buying stolen goods from another country. It's not theirs to sell.

When the recording industry stops pumping out CDs of suck @ss bands for $16 a pop then they can come crying to us music fans. RIAA can kiss my white rear end. Nothing like listening to millionaires whine about how downloading is ruining their industry. They never stop to think it's the lack of talent?
