There are some good people in our country who are hurting right now down South.

The destruction in some parts is total, the loss of life incalcuable as of yet and those who survived have no where to go, no food, clean water, and many have even lost hope for the future as everything they've had and held dear has been swept away.

No matter how technologically advanced our race of men think we are, Mother Nature has her way of letting us know who is still boss.

I just wanted to throw this out there cause I feel for those people. It's really a fu*ked up situaton to be in.

Sad thing is, a lot of the loss of life was preventable if people would have evacuated the high risk areas as they were told to do. The looters certainly are not helping the situation either.

I was stationed at Ft Polk many moons ago, and been to Nawleens a few times.
Without question one of the most beautiful cities I've ever had the pleasure to
visit in my lifetime. I feel bad that the town will never quite be the same, if
there ever is a town to go back to in the future. It is really rough out there now,
cause even though the the storm did not hit straight on, the water level is going
up. No electricity, no clean water, no food that you can really get to. And just
to make things interesting, there are reports that snakes and gators are roaming
about out there as well. Definitely not a place you want to be in right now.

That said, I have absolutely no sympathy for the morons who decided to ride it
out. It's one thing if you are unfortunate not to have a means to get to highground,
but it's another thing altogether to think you can actully survive a storm or it's
aftermath; especially when there was the indication that a portion of LA would be buried
under water. Now ther are all sorts of good folks out there risking their lives
to rescue the few idiots that did not have the common sense to leave when
they had the chance. As for the looters, well I sure they saw this as a windfall
oppurtunity. Here's hoping a few of them get bit in the tuckus by water mocasin

I agree that they should have left. But as you can see many of the people are poor and maybe did not have a way to get out in time. The death toll will make Sept 11 look small. I want to get a group of guys together from my church and head down there in a few weeks to help people get their houses back together.

It will be a while before anyone is allowed back there to even start to decide on how to fix the area. Not until the get the water and electical grid back up to speed will anyone be allowed in to try and "assess" the devastation.

It'll me be many months before anything of real significance happen there.

Sympathy, the poverty there is soo high, many people had no choice but to ride it out. People may have made a very poor judgement to stay but you can not understand what they must have been feeling at the time.

I feel awful for "Anyone: who lost there lives in this event, regardless of why they were there went it hit.

I will agree with everyone that those who could've left should've. Some said that they had ridden out "Andrew" so how bad can it get, that was supposed to have been the worse storm to date?

Getting old people to leave their homes is sometimes hard, after they've been living there for decades. It's sort of like a captian and a sinking ship (no pun intended).

Those states should've issued a "mandatory" evacuation order but the probelm is where to you evacuate the population of three states to?

The simple fact is, there was no evacutation procedure to follow so blaming anyone is a horrible thing to do:

Where should people have gone?
How far?
What should they have brought?
What if you didn't have the means?

The US government wasn't prepared, the local governments were not prepared, the Emergency services were not prepared.

How could an individual or family really comprehend the devastation that was about to ensue; especially the lower economic status population with little or no resources to make a decision?

We did the same thing after Andrew. Groups of people would spend their vacation in south FL rebuilding homes months after the storm sruck. I will be looking for oportunities in Missip, for some reason I do not feel good about La. The question is why wern't the governments ready? They know it was coming! Here in NC we take this stuff seriously, board up and get out!

This storm and how unprepared the city looks is probably going to drastically hurt the economy there. What large corp is going to want to move an office building there?

I've already heard of one company that's speaking about getting all the stuff out of their building and relocating to Houston already because the city is going to be inoperable for many months.

Plus all the rioting and looting that's beginning to go on isn't looking good plus there could be a large disease outbreak.

personally i feel if you are dumb enough to live in a city that's 60' below sea level... sinks each year.... is lower than a lake... and is made out of a swamp..... you had it coming

not to sound cold hearted

also i feel there is no need to send them extra relief money or funds in this time of need.... if it takes a disaster to make people genous and helping other, then were in bad times people. That's worse than doing nothing at all... it's like trying to make up for doing nothing all the rest of the time...

Personally since i've had a job i've been donating 5% of my check before taxes to the united way every single week (and i don't write it off either)

We have taxes in this country for a reason... to help when stuff like this happens.... guilt tripping me and my family saying it's the good thing to do is low

People down south say i'm crazy for living in maine because i have snow storms and blizzards.... yah... well no bliddard is gonna knock my house down or kill me

It was deleted because it had NOTHNG to do with that thread. Plus Autopia is privately owned and isn't a democracy either. You can't get more "land of the free" than having control of your own private property. Sigh, there's always one in every bunch

Rather, if people have the means, maybe they could help out in some fashion. To instill guilt is to tell someone they are wrong for not doing something and I have yet to hear that from anyone anywhere.

Why do you donate to the United Way, when "we have taxes" for that kind of "stuff." Our tax dollars are earmarked for a wide range of social welfare programs at the federal, state and local levels to the tune of billions of dollars. You think you're the only one who donates to charity or offers their time to help people anytime during the year?

So your "logic" is for Americans to kick their feet up and let those folks suffer through the country's worst natural disaster of biblical proportions because we have taxes to pay for it?

What was your "logic" on September 11, 2001? Again, sit back and say like a fool, "we have taxes to take care of that - I donate to the United Way." I guess I shouldn't have helped the pregnant woman who collapsed in an absolute panic on 6th Avenue as we both watched the second tower go down. I should have went on my way and rationalized it because I donate to my charitable causes.
