Question Portable Automotive GPS Units

I'm approaching my birthday in March and Kat has agreed to buy me a GPS unit for my truck

I've been looking around and I'm very interested in the TomTom Go or GO plus. Does anyone own one of these? Any feedback on them?

I'd also like to hear from owners of other GPS units in the range of $500 to $800 (street price). Do they work well? Any problems etc.

Look forward to reading any replies

Somebody....it was either PC Mag or one of the big 3 car mags (C/D, R&T, or MT) had a review within the last 6 months and had some pretty definite opinions...sorry to be so vague...

Do you remember if they were generally positive or negative opinions? I'll go searching the online mags now.

EDIT: You da man Mike! Thanks VERY much

I do not have an automotive GPS unit but Garmin is considered one of, if not the, best GPS manufacturer in the marine industry.

Thanks Greg .. I'm looking at Garmins too, especially these two units (one of which is new to the market and a blatant TomTom copy LOL)

If anyone is interested, this is the TomTom Plus, see the 3D maps?

Also, I'm looking at the Magellan 700 .. at the very top of my price range but also well regarded

Feedback from any owners of these units would be very welcome!

Own a notebook computer? Hit the MS site and purchase the MS Streets and Trips/GPS package for 120 odd bones. Full color, sound (w/ computer), and the possibility of watching Arrested Development on DVD during long interstate stretches....

Hmm, just recently I was looking at getting myself a Palm Zire 72, and you can get it along with a GPS system. You would end up needing an additional expansion card (not too much money) but you can get free shipping and a $50 rebate too. I believe they use TomTom to get the job done also.

I don't believe that the package with the Palm is as advanced as a stand alone GPS but from what I have hear, it works out pretty well for someone on an average trip. I thought about buying a stand alone GPS unit, but then really stopped and thought that I wouldn't use it too too much, so I didn't need anything too advanced, just enough to get me in the general area of where I want to go. I can get that with the palm, along with a built in camera, mp3 player, calender, blah blah blah.

There are a couple other ones, I actually made a thread about this not too long ago, probably 3 weeks old at the most. There were a couple other products, but I am going with the Palm because of its features. The title of the thread was asking for buy.com discount codes or something to that effect.
