Ever have an emergent situation where your fitness literally saved you from death or very serious injury? Gets your attention, and reminds you that "survival of the fittest" isn't just a catch-phrase.
Anyhow, I'm "just like that"

The exercise and proper diet are simply how I live. I sure don't consider myself a "health nut", and I can enjoy my share of unhealthy indulgences, but I simply won't be out of shape physically any more than I'd be careless intellectually.
If I don't keep at it, my performance drops off (not just in the gym; I lead a very active day-to-day life), I don't feel/look as good, and I...well, I just know I'm not being the best I can be. Yeah, I know that sounds corny, but I hold myself to some mighty high standards.
And on a more practical note, if I don't do the cardio at least every third day, it gets *so* much harder that I'm painfully reminded of the cost of slacking off, but good! If I get out of shape, I'll have to buy a whole new wardrobe, and that'd be one seriously expensive proposition
Plus, I find that if I start the day with some think-I'm-gonna-die cardio, or some heavy weight work, whatever else the day throws at me is a cakewalk by comparison; I *know* I can handle whatever comes my way because every exercise session reinforces my sense of efficacy.
