Camera broke...need help

Don't you hate when you do a detail and don't have a camera to take progress pics?
The last 3 days I have done a Ferrari, Corvette, Lexus and a Jag and have no pics of any.
I know we have a lot of camera folks here and I figure you guys might be my best help.
I have a Canon SD750 which the screen went black on it. Just over a year old and out of warranty. There is no camera shop near me so the only option I have is send it out somewhere. I am a little leery of just looking up a shop online and sending my camera off. Can anyone recommend some place you have used or one you know is legit and good?
Thanks for any help.

Just bought a Canon Rebel Xsi today for the same reason because yes; I HATE not having a camera when I'm working. You never know when you're gonna get something good. Good luck with your search.

Like the majority of modern electronic devices, these cameras are a disposable commodity.

Contact Canon for a verbal estimate and you'll quickly realize that you can purchase a brandy-new camera for about the same money as the "best effort basis" repair quote

I'm throwing away these small pocket cams when they fail. I have had numerous lense drive issues. My SONY just crapped out last month. However, I truly got my $$$ worth of that one.

FWIW, a modern dSLR camera is likely to be more reliable than these tiny, complex pockets cams for two reasons: They don't have the fussy lense drive mechanism and the number of shutter releases they're rated for is MUCH higher.

You can ask CANAON about an upgrade scenario. That's what I did with my G3 when it failed 4 weeks after the warranty ended. (Yes, I was furious )

Happy hunting!

Have to agree with Tom p. on this one. I broke my Sony alphaa little while back and it was almost the cost of new one just to have sony look at it much less fix it. It sucks but junk it and go buy another.

Re: Camera broke...need help

I hear you guys on that they are throw aways and all that but I'll add this also.
I lost my main job this year and we have been cost cutting all year so I am not spending $250-300 on a new one when we can fix ours for $70-110 with Canon being on the high side. But like I said I am a little leery of an online place and was hoping someone on here would know a quality camera shop that I could trust.

Sadly, that was my exact experience. The quoted inspection cost, not including repair, was nearly the cost of the cam Thanks, but no thanks.

Understood.

Plan B: maybe you could find a "better" camera on eBay for $100?? God knows there are tons of them; some will have a 30 day warranty.

I looked at your link, and I might be doing this! I have an older camera that has a broken screen due to my moving company. I'm waiting on a check from them to replace it, but if they don't take the broken one (sometimes they do), then according to Canon I can get an SX110IS for $129 (amazon sells the new for $300). I can't believe they take broken units back, that is so great!

Yeah, its a pretty nice deal, almost a blessing in disguise. the SX110 is nice, its not too small and not too big, has manual controls and uses AA's which is nice. Nice zoom range too.

Re: Camera broke...need help

Check out Canon Digital Photography Forums.

I visit there from time to time and I've traded and sold numerous lenses and cameras there. I plan on purchasing a 40D from there in the near future. You could probably pick up a Canon G9 or G10 for a reasonable price!
