Well, you're right, the result you'll get from a server a greater distance away will be more inline with what your actually usage speed and experience are, but if you are really trying to measure the actual size of your pipe, you need a close server with enough bandwidth to saturate your connection. This gives you the max through put of your connection, which should match fairly closely with what your ISP says it is providing you with.
