These guys then have wear and tear, insurance, truck payment, and need something for revenue. If diesel hits $5 /gallon, that will put them at about $1 / mile just for fuel.

The alternative is shipping by rail, but you had better not be in a rush to get your goods.
I know people in trucking and a client who owns a business selling truck engines, trans etc, he' s in Atlanta which is basically a trucking hub and its bad. Lot of self employed drivers are out of work as they can't afford the cost of diesel and companies that have W2 truckers are getting killed on cost.

Wait till people are paying 15 bucks for gallon of milk or 20 bucks for a regular loaf of bread. Friggen lemons are $1+ a piece now.

Re: Are you pissed off at the high gas prices?

My energetics class professor keeps asking still rhetorically, "Why is gas so cheap?"

something to think about...

Re: Are you pissed off at the high gas prices?

I was watching something on MSNBC about the gas prices. It seems as though gas prices are rising like crazy yet people still have to buy it. I don't think prices will go down unless a significant change in demand decreases.

Hm. It's not really bothering me. I bike a lot.

I think I've filled my car up once since the start of March.

Of course, I'm a poor college student so I still know how to stretch a dollar.

1.40/L here. I wouldn't mind paying 4.04/gallon...

You'll see a lot of companies go under as they can't raise prices fast enough to cover transportation costs. I've got an internship at a major bread manufacturer, and distribution is rapidly becoming a cost driver.

Everyone made some big mistakes in the early 90s, moving production to where labor was cheap and not necessarily where the buyers were. No one could have forseen things going as badly as they are right now - and gas has gone up 4x in 10 years, when most facilities have a life cycle of 50+ years.

A lot of this has been coming for a long time - specialization at the plant level made a lot of sense when diesel was 99 cents a gallon, but nowadays it's killing companies to be moving product 1500+ miles between regions, instead of having local production with 150 mile truck runs.

Re: Are you pissed off at the high gas prices?

Americas oil consumption is based in part because of its size. Compare the US's oil consumption to that of Europe, not individual countries. Not only that, dont compare US prices to Europes prices since Europe has tax on the gas for healthcare, so to those who say they would pay our prices, would you be willing to also pay for your healthcare too?

I agree ! In Europe what would they pay for gas if they paid our taxes. They have health care , better public transporation, and better roads. The roads in the Chicago area are bad , pot holes everywhere.
