well we can add earthquake to the list of natural disasters I slept through. the list being tornado and hurricane. I'm in bloomington indiana and my wife and child woke up and freaked out but I stood my ground and slept(funny my wife didn't wake me up thoughmaybe she was hoping something would happen to me). anybody else have an earthquake story, related to this quake?

Re: earthquake in IL

I'm in northern Indiana and felt it. I was in bed and when I woke up it was shaking along with the rest of the house. Certainly a weird feeling. It a was 5.4.

Quote:
A magnitude 5.4 earthquake early today near the southern Illinois town of West Salem rocked people awake in neighboring Indiana and even in Milwaukee, 350 miles to the north.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency received many telephone calls, but none of the callers reported any damage. The quake was centered about 40 miles north-northwest of Evansville, Indiana.

There are no reports of injuries.

You guys complains of a little 5.4 ..... Here in Chile that is nothing .. We get them all the time . You out to try 6.5 on a 30 story building. Now that is a thrill ride ...

Re: earthquake in IL

Yep, woke us up on the far west side of St. Louis. Don't know if I could really "feel" it per se, but we had bowls and such rattling for a couple of minutes. I probably would have slept through it, but my wife woke me up.

Wierd. As I'm typing this we're getting more aftershocks. I definitely felt that one....

Re: earthquake in IL

I "woke up" but I wasn't technically "awake", so not being able to grasp what was going on I assumed it was cold and I was shivering really bad, and proceeded to cover up and go back to bed Also forgot to add I'm in southern Indiana, there was a 4.2 after shock from it a couple hours ago as well.

This is funny. It's our local message board...most of the people on it aren't the shining stars of our little community here:

I'm sure it's not really a 'complaint', so to say, but more unusual interest. The midwestern states of the US are not prone to frequent earthquakes like you are in Chile or California. I remember one a few years ago (maybe 5?) that we felt up here in WI. I'd almost compare it to someone in the south seeing snow.

Re: earthquake in IL

I just decided to do a little research:
Quote:
The New Madrid Seismic zone lies within the central Mississippi Valley, extending from northeast Arkansas, through southeast Missouri, western Tennessee, western Kentucky to southern Illinois. Historically, this area has been the site of some of the largest earthquakes in North America. Between 1811 and 1812, 4 catastrophic earthquakes, with magnitude estimates greater than 7.0, occurred during a 3-month period. Hundreds of aftershocks followed over a period of several years. The largest earthquakes to have occurred since then were on January 4, 1843 and October 31, 1895 with magnitude estimates of 6.0 and 6.2 respectively.

In addition to these events, seven events of magnitude >= 5.0 have occurred in the area. Instruments were installed in and around this area in 1974 to closely monitor seismic activity. Since then, more than 4000 earthquakes have been located, most of which are too small to be felt. On average one earthquake per year will be large enough to be felt in the area.
When will the New Madrid Seismic zone create another Big One?
