an old semi member coming back to add my 2c. I do computer repair as a side job.

AVOID the any version of Norton PERIOD. It does nothing but slow systems down. If you WANT to pay for an antivirus go for NOD32 best for pay antivirus on the net.

Also, I no longer recommend Ad-Aware...it pains me to do it because it served me reliably for so long, but after they were bought out and the original person was more or less pushed aside. There has been nothing but internal conflict in that company and it just is not much of a reliable program anymore.

Spybot is great. Still free and still works wonders. I also agree with SpywareBlaster, it has its benefits compared to Spybot and its drawbacks as well. Overall not a bad program though.

You free antivirus programs are spot on. I use a full version of AVG that came with a mag subscription.

Another free program I forgot to mention is SuperAntiSpyware. The definitions are updated on almost a daily basis and for me, it catches more things than SpyBot or AdAware, which I agree has not kept up over the years.

The one program I haven't tried on Ray's list is Auslogics' Disk Defrag. I've always just used Disk Defrag from Windows itself, so it'll be interesting to see the differences between the 2.

Used most of those and have recently did an XP reinstall to clean out my system. Didn't remember taking that many pictures. LOL

Also not a big fan of Norton, have used it from day one on this computer and it was painfully slow. Trying Avast right now.

Another program i am trying is Sandboxie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . trying to keep the crap out before it even starts.
