Restoring links and bookmarks in MS Internet Explorer

Guys, I am setting up a new computer and trying to figure out how to copy my old bookmarks/links/favorites from my old machine (no longer runs) to my new machine.

I've learned that IE has a specific Import/Export function, but you've got to be able to run the program to use that and that's no longer an option for me.

I've tried copying the links from the old machine, but they loose their functionality when copied to the new machine. The link is still there but it's been converted into a "shortcut" to the original link and all URL info is lost.

Thanks for any suggestions.

There is a file under the user profiles called "Favorites". Just copy that folder onto your new computer in the appropriate place and it should work fine. That's what I used to do in the old days before Windows would do its own migration.

Yeah, that's what I've tried and it doesn't capture the URL. I only get a short cut to the old link.

When I initiate the copy process I get a warning that some data may be lost in the process

How are you copying if your old machine is dead? Do you have the HDD in an enclosure? If you can read the drive, you should be able to pull that file no problem. It almost sounds like are copying the desktop shortcuts rather than the actual favorites file. It should be under C:users/user name/Favorites.

Re: Restoring links and bookmarks in MS Internet Explorer

I'm runnin bartPE which permits me to navigate around the broken HD. I then grab the data from the various locations and move them to a stand-alone HD. It works quite well.

I've got just about everything wrapped up apart from grabbing these "favorites" for IE.

I'm copying the file Documents and Settings\Tom\Favorites

I dunno why that isn't working. Hopefully a real IT guy will chime in (I only play one on TV).

Sorry That's why I went with that Dell DataSafe so now I'm mirrored...of course that won't help me if the fan dies on the graphics board and fries the chip again!
