ok, so it's not exactly the same and a little out of focus, but how's this, SpoiledMan?

I'm going to test my "spoiledness" and see what my wife says about me getting a Rebel for Fathers Day. Costco has the kit for $699 after a $100 rebate. Wish me luck....

How is the lens that comes with them? What do you recommend in addition. It would be mostly still stuff and I don't need a super zoom at this point.

The lens that comes with the camera is okay. nothing fancy by any means. I'd recommend the Canon 50/1.8 in addition, because it's so small, lightweight and very sharp. Additionally, it allow lower light shooting (the 1.8 aspect), which is very nice. AND... it's only $75.

Lots of folks love the 17-40/4 lens and my personal favorite walking around lens is the 28-135IS. Each of these isn't on the cheap end, though.

No joke is right, I see a lot of "L" glass!

Not to get too far OT but...which version is the 70-200mm? F/2.8 I'm guessing? Also is that the 100-400mm? I'm looking to pick up my first L glass for my telephoto needs, and have been considering the 70-200mm f/4 or 100-400mm IS, there also a couple similiar Sigmas in the price range. Any input on my decision would be greatly appreciated, your definately a respected photographer to me; you can even PM me if you want.

SpoiledMan: The Canon Digital Rebel XT is a great camera. If interested in getting it, you might want to consider the 28-135mm IS, I actually just put mine up for sale in the Trading Post forum.

Johnny, that does look like a nice lens. I don't know what all the numbers mean but I do know enough to know that it has a nice zoom range. Don't get me put out man. I'm working on just getting the camera first.

^^ the 28-135 is the lens I mentioned as my favorite "walking around" lens

John, the 70-200 is the 2.8 IS version. I absolutely love that lens. For a much more affordable option the f/4 version is a VERY fine lens and lot more manageable (this thing weighs a ton!). The one on the left is an older copy of the 300/4 I picked up used. Very sharp lens, great for autosports.

I've never been too fond of the 100-400, but I know there are some autosports photographers that make their living with that lens. If I need extra reach, I just slap the 1.4x teleconverter on my long lenses.

As far as the Sigmas, I know people who are very happy with them and have a bunch more cash in their pockets... I bought most all of my lenses when I was in a debt-happy mode. I've since scaled back and don't see anything else I would add, except maybe the 24-70/2.8 for model work.
