Weekend wheel repair (w/ PICS)

The other day was relatively bad for me. I went into work at about 4 am to round on some patients and found a few that were not doing too well. I worked diligently to get them T’d-up and feeling better, ensured the on-call doc understood the issues and finally left around 11 am. I pulled into my garage and got out my vehicle forgetting that my brand new Blackberry was laying in my lap. You can figure out the rest of that story I’m sure. It wasn’t destroyed, but I sure did scratch the hell out of it!

Once I was finished bitchin’ about that I decided it would be nice to spend some time with the family at the local park, so my wife, daughter and myelf hope into the wagon and head to the park.

On the way, I remembered I needed to stop by the bank and make a deposit. Being the lazy SOB that I am, I decide to proceed through the drive through. I pull-in and make the deposit successfully, proceed to pull-out and as I’m making a right turn out of the stall, I hear the dreaded sound of wheel curbage. It was dreadful to say the least. I only heard the sound for a second, but I immediately knew there was damage to be seen. I quickly found a parking hole, got out and inspected the damage:

I reality the damage was minimal, but because I;m a rather anal and this car is only a month old, I was still pretty pissed about the situation. I got past it for the family sake and we continued our journey to the park.

After returning home, I hopped on the internet and did a little research on the Mazda 3 wheel color. I found that Dupli-color made a silver that was a apparently a pretty close match to the 3’s wheels. With that, I went and gathered the appropriate supplies:

And, got to work:

Taped:

Sanded:

Covered:

Painted:

Results:

I was pretty happy with the results. The paint isn’t a perfect match but only someone involved in concourse (sp?) show-car judging would notice.

Just thought I’d share my weekend events with you people!

JJ

Sorry to here about your bad day.
Nice work on the wheel, must be rewarding to complete work like this on your own and get such great results.

Re: Weekend wheel repair (w/ PICS)

Thanks for the post. I just recently incurred some curb rash on one of my mazda 6 rims. This gives me hope that I may be able to make it look a little better.

Re: Weekend wheel repair (w/ PICS)

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I was surprised at how relatively simple this repair was. it was definitely worth the time and $10.

Re: Weekend wheel repair (w/ PICS)

Great job, looks excellent. Was there any primer involved or just the one coat of paint??

Re: Weekend wheel repair (w/ PICS)

Great results. You definately give me hope that I can do the same to two wheels on my Sentra. Hopefully I can find a color that is similar to my wheels. Thanks for sharing your process and results.
