If this ends up looking ANYTHING like a garage I am putting you up for some sort of Autopian award!

Man, it looks like the aftermath of a K-Mart Blue Light Special!:scared

Man, that's nothing compared to how my garage started out 4 years ago.... but good luck, you're going to need a chiropractor after that

I thoroughly clean my garage out a couple times per year. My wife has a tendancy to rathole junk in there. I have a few strategies that may help.

First, I always remove everything and get it out of the garage first. I make 5 piles. One is junk, one is stuff to put back in the garage, one is stuff that needs to be stored in the attic, one is stuff that needs to be donated to charity, one is an undecided pile for stuff you're not quite sure what to do with.

If you haven't used it in a year, think very hard before you decide to keep it. Chances are you don't need it.

If you don't already, use a program for itemizing non-cash charitable contributions. It will pay for itself many times over. I never have garage sales; I always donate everything. My deductions increased 4 fold after I started using the software because I didn't know how to estimate the value of things. The software uses thrift-store values for just about everything you can think to donate which is 100% Kosher with the IRS.

Pondscum, I have never heard of claiming non-cash contributions before.

In Australia about the only thing they don't tax yet is the air we breathe. Unfortunately I really don't think I could get a deduction of the non-cash contributions here.

I reckon your advice will be highly valued by the US resident members though.

Not to get too far off topic well, while we are waiting for Patrick to clean up the garage.. . what software are you using for this? I have a truckload (no joke) of things and was thinking this would make it easier? TIA.
