Got a question for you, I remember when you dug the trench to your garage to install some wiring, what model or type of trencher did you use? I want to install some drains from my home gutters to the street and cant find a rental trencher that will dig a trench for 4" solid PVC. If Im not mistaken, you did install 4" right?

Well I am not sure what brand it was but it is a ride on trencher that I got from my local rental place for like 75$ a day (I think) They had 2 to choose from, walk behind and the one I got. The one I used cut a path 6in wide and 54in deep.. I will try to dig up the pics.

Also just to let you know, Last year I was planning on doing the same thing, I then found out what I was planning is now against code in my city, You may want to check in to this..

Thanks, all my rental place has is the walk behind type that cuts like 3 3/4". That trencher you rented looks like just what I need for my job. I'll be sure to check with my local code/zoning office about those gutter drains.

Avalanche:

We've run 4" non-perforated drain pipe from all our rental property downspouts out to the area between the sidewalk and street (code would not allow to run into street, although that's where it ends up).

We tie the downspouts into the tile with a 90 degree elbow at the downspout end. We have a 10" round plastic "sump" with a grate at ground level to allow the water to drain between the sidewalk and the street. All three cities that we've done this in were leary (we evidently were the first to do this - or at least tell them about it before we did it), but all three allowed it when we explained that it would keep water melting from snow on the roofs from refreezing as ice on sidewalks or in parking areas.

Our tile is only buried 8-10" and we're in Iowa - below freezing a few months each winter. 40"+ would be overkill unless you're north of Canada.

The streets in my neighborhood dont have sidewalks and they have "stormwater washways" or swails on each side of the street to keep water off the roadway. Im going to run the drains about 150 feet from my downspouts to the stormwater swails. Im likely going to run non perforated with a few perforated "bleeders" in a couple damp areas in my yard on the way to the street to bleed water from the damp areas to the street as well.
