work benches

Having decided on the height for the future work bench area, working on installing electrical outlets at this point in construction, I was wondering what opinions are out here about just how much work bench area is really useful?

Which do you prefer, floor space or bench space, since a work bench will reduce the other?

My two car garage has an 8' bench, (soon to be removed), since this new shop area is to let that garage be solely to park the vehicles in, not work on them or other projects.

I know it is largely subjective, but isn't everything when it comes to our stuff?


Any pics or ideas on the perfect bench area?

I have about 60' linear feet of workbench in my garage. I'll try to get some pics of it tommorow. I made it myself...it is made mostly of 2x6 for the frame and 2x10 for the work surface, all bolted and screwed together (no nails!). Damn near indestructable.

I would think it would largely depend of if you will be doing car repairs as well as detailing. Just something to think about...

Here's a thought...

Stainless steel tables and shelving.

Visit a local USED restaurant equipment dealer. With some imagination, I'll bet you could create some pretty nifty custom stuff.

That's a great idea, one I had not thought of. Even if just a stainless top was available from a restaurant supply, they are built for durability. I know of a local supplier for that type nearby and will check it out. Thanks!

...and the "new" garage/shop project continues...put my primary purpose for it in there the other day, just to see how the natural light works...

I usually suggest a 5-6’ bench and a mobile tool cabinet along with lots of storage available for products

I found a sweet 8' by 4' stainless work bench from my local army/navy surplus store.

I love it. Solid as a rock and an upper shelf about 12 inchs wide that runs length of table.

About 40" high.

I replaced the top with a 4 x 8 foot sheet of 3/4 inch melamite cut to size.

It's perfect for me...cost $150 and about 30 bucks for the melamite.

A local trade school is offering classes in cabinet making. I'm going to take a few course and hopefullly be able to build my own benches.

how about you hold your own private cabinet/bench lessons and get the students to pay you, and make you a bench hehe
