First Painting/Baking... good results?

Just for s's and g's, i took my rear wiper arm off the car (was chipped, peeling, cracking)... i used aircraft paint remover to completly strip all of the paint off, so now it's all down to the bare metal.

i went over it with a fine sanding sponge to scuff it all up...

i always heard about baking paint in the over to speed up drying/curing time... so i decided to foil up a cookie sheet, lay the arm on it, and give her a light coat... then throw it in the oven at 200 degrees for 10 minutes before i give it it's next coat.

i plan on 2 color coats, and 2 clear coats. 10 min in the oven after each... and 30 min in the over on the last coat.


Thoughts on this? and i doing this complely wrong and will turn out like crap? or what?

I think 200° is a little hot.
I do the same thing at work and I use about 100°-125° and leave the part in for maybe 5-7 min. than I hang the part and allow it to dry completely depending on the humidity might take another 5-7 min, it also speed up the time it takes you to finish the job.

if you can pre-wipe the part with a prep-solve to remove any oils that might be on the part from your fingers then paint.

i figured 200 was to low.

pro paint/bake booths usually dont go much over 125. they can go higher but paint still needs time to "gas" or let the solvents evaporate from the paint. 200 is definitely high!

Remember they put your WHOLE car in those booths with whatever you left inside them. they sometimes bake for 1/2hr! Imagine putting a can of gas inside a 200deg oven!

I thought they went higher originally as well until i started using one every day.

gotcha... next time i bake i'll set her to about 125... it's been a few days and the wiper arms that i baked are holding up pretty good. no chips or anything yet.

You can put a can of gas in a 200deg oven. It doesn't flash until the 400's.

I'd keep it around 125 if I were you, I'm sure some paints will take 200+ degrees easy (I've got enamels that go over 500), but I sure wouldn't want to find out which ones don't . If anything, I'd go 125/45 minutes.
