Or maybe ask them "Which 12 items are you planning on buying?"

Unfortunately, this kind of behavior is not limited to grocery stores. I have seen some things in restaurants that would make me wonder if some people have home training or common sense.

So many people think it's their right to do whatever they want in these instances and could care less about anyone else. I've seen customers speak up against these people at self checkout lanes(and some of these jerks have full carriages) and at times they snap and scream back, "who's going to stop me? I'm paying just like you!" It's freightening. It's like they're oblivious to common courtesy and social grace.
Another thing that bugs me is when they screw up at these self checkout lanes and just move to the next open station leaving the machine hanging. I was buying some breakfast this morning and some I saw some lady checking out on my way in. I walked by a min later going to another isle and I saw her at another station. Then, when I came back to check out, she was at a 3rd station! The other 2 stations were blinking and waiting for "customer service authorization". Luckily I got to the last station before she moved over...she apparently hung up that 3rd station too! Was it so hard for her to ask for help from an employee that she had to hang up all the machines?

once again... notice this too many times
common courtesy (like holding a door for somebody without any acknowledgement) these days is too much for some...

IMHO, that's the store not doing thier job. They try to cut personnel by having one person cover four U-Scans. That's fine if the person is there to fix it when there are problems. Happens to me all the time. It's when they rely on the technology to 'service' the customers, the technology fails, and there is nobody around to fix it (i.e. puch a reset button).

Just do what you can to slow the cycle.

Added to the list:
- People who use self-checkout when they have a full cart.
Self-checkout is supposed to be an "express lane".

Agreed. Wal-Mart is the champion of this tactic. We have a Randall's grocery store near my house, and no matter what time of day, what day of the week, or how long the lines are, they never have more than two registers open at a time. The lines routinely back up into the aisles, and good luck wishing they would open another register. IN MY DAY (lol) when I was bagging groceries, the stores would have pretty much every register going and at least one, if not two, sackers on each register. Why don't they do that anymore? Oh wait...I know, gotta maximize the bottom line and keep the almighty shareholders happy.

Well you can't fault the store completely, you do get the occasional, ok frequent jerk who doesn't take the time to learn how to use the machine correctly or just doesn't have the courtesy to get help rather than hanging up machines so others can't use them.
I do agree that the lack of employees is a problem though. I've noticed checkout lines growing longer and longer.

kompressor: I am not holding the store blameless, either.

I have to agree with you on that, Tasty. There are very few full service grocery stores around these days. In the mid 90s, we used to have Byerly's and I was at the level of customer service and inventory I saw there. I was actually looking forward to them opening up in other parts of the Chicago area.
However, that never came to pass. They left the Chicago area circa 1998.
