I actually witnessed this yesterday at 2 different grocery stores. One instance a young mother was shovelling freshly cut watermellon from the prepared food section into her toddler's mouth while she herself was chomping on pineapple. The other instance was some obese woman chowing on a bag of chips and a Snapple. At least the young mother had the decency to pay for the fruit.

Heh...my office is next to a supermarket and I see people, generally women for some reason, just push their carts into other people's cars when they unload or after they're done unloading. I've actually had to run to stop a cart from ramming an M6 once because some woman decided to just fling the cart toward the corral rather than pushing it there. The M6 owner saw this and thanked me, then promptly chewed out the woman. All I heard of that convo was a screaming "F**k off!" from the woman as she peeled away.

I was just thinking about this thread! I went to the store to get some ice cream, and of course, parked in the back of the lot. I had to walk parallel to the store to grab 2 carts, even though I didn't need a cart this time. So I pushed those into the corral, got my ice cream, and left. I then stopped at the gas station to get a gallon of milk. I walked in, and there was a woman and her young kid at the register. I walked to the back to the refrigerated section, and all the while heard the woman yelling at her kid. I got back to the front and watched the action progress. For some reason she was buying a bunch of ice cream bars for him, and realized that she had enough money for one more. She sends him to grab another one, and he opens up a container of Pepsi products and ice cubes. He starts sucking on an ice cube, so of course mommy yells at him. He then spits the ice cube back into the container! Then mommy goes over and grabs another ice cream bar for him and pulls him by the arm back to the register.
My question is...why was she rewarding all this misbehavior anyway, and why did she feel the need to buy yet another ice cream bar when he was being a total a$$ in the store?

My grocery store pet peeves are pretty much the same as everyone else's. I get annoyed with parents who do not control their kids especially when they throw a tantrum when they don't get what they want.
I have another one, though but this one is aimed at stores.
When you see a line going halfway through the store, would it trouble the store to open another register? I have been in stores (Aldi) where they see this is going on but they have a ton of empty registers.

People at the grocery store are terrible. I work in one and I believe that once people get over the age of 6 they think they can just be nasty to anybody.
We had this lady who complained that her endive lettuce was rung up incorrectly. Okay. She said "This always happens and they're ripping us off!" I happened to be supervising the cashiers so I got to deal with her complaints. I said, "Ma'am, we're not responsible for entering the prices into the computer, but I can have it corrected and refund your money. I'll write it down and give the note to the person that can fix the price tomorrow morning." No, that wasn't good enough. She told me I was being rude and that I was "no smarter than her." Uhm. Argh.
I just looked at her because I thought I was being fairly NICE to somebody that was accusing everybody working of being crooks. I called the manager and he told her that he would reprimand me (ha!) and this seemed to placate her (that's all she really wanted). Of course I was never reprimanded because the cashiers and customers in their lines said I was very polite.
People would be better off if they met people on a level playing field...
I don't understand why people take WIC checks to the express lane. They take FOREVER to enter (start date, end date, total, scan, write down total, endorse) and they are seldom ever single--two or three checks that have to be run up precisely as per what it says on the list of items. And then they argue over wanting the Reese's peanut butter, the Everybody Crunches Forever and Always Cereal, the wrong formula, the pepper jack cheese instead of the regular montery jack, etc. Or they sign the check BEFORE they come into the store, and I'm suppose to believe it's actually them. And then they get mad that they can't use the check anywhere else now. I really feel bad, but I'm not working because I don't need a job...
Or "I know you have the regular creamer on sale, but I want the hazlenut fat free sugar free, can I subsitute?" No, this isn't the bartering system. I'd love to, but they must have cut a deal on the regular creamer and not the fat free.
Or if they want to write a check and they don't have our card. Our card is ONLY for personal checks and check cashing at the customer service desk, not actually getting our sale prices. So a lot of people don't have them. It just makes it so we have information if their checks bounce and it makes the process a lot quicker (as quick as credit).
"But just this once?"
"No, I can't."
"bu.."
"It's the store policy,"
"I'LL CALL FRANK BUDWEY!"
He's the owner, and everybody knows him and has a direct line to his house. Obviously.
I also love the people that talk on their cell phones while being cashed out, and then they get confused about the credit machine, and then they complain to the person on the phone, and then when I try to help they act like they actually know what they're doing.
Generally I'm very nice. I treat the nasty customers nicely because I really don't know if they're in a bad situation or not (I'm fairly certain that most of the nasty people are only nasty because they are in a bad mood, not because they are actually mean people). People are just so unaware of their actions it boggles me. They have work, they have their kids, they have their 2 homes, they have their this and that and everything. Americans are richer than ever, but they're not any happier. And it scares me to think that they don't have the time (or want to make the time) to sit down and think for a few minutes about things.

Wow, scary comentary on our society! I usually shop on my way home from work or later int he evening so I miss alot of the "fun" you guys seem to see. I also, will grab carts within my walking path on the way into the store and return them to the corral and I try to be nice to everyone. It amazes mehow people act in this country and we wonder why the rest of the world views us the way they do.

That is indeed a scary commentary. However, its very true, this is not just isolated to the US, its happens the world over.

My dad was a small-town grocer for about 30 years before he retired, and I grew up working in the store. We constantly saw the type of behaviors described here, and more . . .
My biggest peeve is finding an item (usually a perishable) just jammed back onto the shelf somewhere else in the store. The customer decided, "Hey, I really don't want this ice cream." That's fine; just please don't put it back on the shelf next to the freakin' aspirin, m'kay?
And here's a little food for thought . . . while markup on groceries varies from 30-40%, net profit tends to run between 0.5 and 1.0%. That's how thin the margins are. It takes a lot of revenue to make up the lost profit from just one $20 pack of steaks that some moron decided to throw back onto the shelf next to the diapers.

I recall an incident where my gf was rudely treated by personnel at the seafood counter. She was interested in buying some Tilapia. The worker proceeded to continue with whatever she was doing without addressing the growing number of people at the counter.
My gf got incensed and laid into them about customer service.

A few weeks ago I was checking out at a U-Scan. For some reason after I scanned an item (not one that required age approval or anything), it said 'Please wait for Cashier Assistance'. Well, no cashier around! I stood there for probably 5-7 minutes, nobody ever came. I left the food (mostly meats and frozen stuff) partially bagged, partally sitting in the cart right there and walked out. As I left, the manager and a couple of the employees (probably the one supposed to be watching the U-Scan) were sitting outside having a smoke break. Then went to a competitor and bought the same things.
And here's a little tip: When the person in front of you obviously has more than the alloted number of items in the express lane, start counting them out loud. 'ONE' , 'TWO', 'THREE', etc.
