Re: auto transmission mod

Sounds like you are talking about the shift programming of the transmission. Some cars have Normal/Sport modes that change the shift points, and I'm sure there are people replacing chips or reprogramming them for specific shift characteristics. Is that something like what you are talking about? Because if not, I have no clue.

Re: auto transmission mod

i think setec knows what im talking about..but bigjim, from what i heard..if you have an automatic transmission, it is something that instead of making the car shift around 3 or 4 rpms, it makes the car redline everything, and from what i hear its like racing with a manual, but the car does the work

Re: auto transmission mod

Um...back in the pre-electronics days we used to call this a "shift kit" which modified the hydraulics in the transmission. There was also something called a "kickdown linkage" back in those dark carbureted days...

My auto transmissions typically upshift at higher than 3 or 4 rpm, but with a modern car, if you've got your foot to the floor, you should be upshifting at pretty close to redline, anyway. What kind of car are we talking about?

Re: auto transmission mod

why whould you want it to redline?

all of my cars have a shift kit, higher stall converters

my 81 Z28 has kickdown linkage but I perfer to down shift manually with my Hurst Quater stick

and my 97 I have a larger (corvette ) servo & I can adjust the shift point and firmness, with a hand held programmer

What kind of car and what do you want it to do?

Well then that easy(because I know a little about them )

I like to start with a stall converter but you can do any or all of these

a higher stall converter will allow the engine to rev a little higher off the line
and therefore put it closser to it powerband....this will give you a slingshot effect out off the hole!

as far as the shift point and firmness goes there are two options
on is a shift kit installed in the transmission and the other is to have the computer programmed

also you will get more out of a mail order tune then you will get with a hand held programer

the the 4L60E also has a external servo that will firm up the 1-2 shift

also check out:

pcmforless.com for your tune

performabuilt.com if you want a nice tranny built for you

also it sound like this is a must read you you:
