Is $12,000 too much?

I wouldn't spend that much money on a paintjob. It is not going to help the value of the car and just think about what would happen if you were to wreck the car. You just added $12K to losses in that accident. There are many other things that you could do with that money. Maybe not invest it yet if you dont want, but there are other cool things that I would think would bring much more enjoyment (pool table, plasma tv, all out stereo system, etc)

Yea $12,000 to go from one stock color to another especially when going from a light color to a dark color (much easier than the other way around) is waaaaay to much. If it was some sort of custom paint job with alot of artwork (like a tuner car) then your in the right ball park. But for a straight up swap on color I'd bet you could find it for about half that price if you look around some more.

hey chaos, I'm not your age yet but I'm close enough (19). I have a horrible habit of being completely impulsive. Let me give you some examples. On a college budget, I have dropped over 6k into my pathfinder. Intake, performance comp, HIDS, headlights, taillights, lights, STEREO, and security. I just recently dropped 1k onto a k40 Calibre radar detection system...I spent 100 bucks on supplies for painting my DOOR HANDLES. 1k on an amp, 700+ on speakers, and subs. I have put so much money in that car its ridiculous. Now I've gotten to the point where I've read about investing and everything and I'm TRYING to be more cautious with my spending. Those examples with putting the 12k in a fund with compounding interest are completely correct. The truth is, 12k for a paintjob like that is just not smart imo. Take this from someone who would consider doing something like that too The truth is you will NEVER make that 12k back by selling it. Since we are so young, investing is the BEST thing you could do with it. Throw it in a IRA and you'll be set in 40 years. So thats my opinion. It would look great with a paintjob but seriously ask yourself if its worth it. BTW if your going to spend ANY of it, put it into something like the engine
