AVON tires, anyone use them?

I'll need new tires on the G35 soon, and I've been looking for a good tire for not a lot of $$. So, ran across the Avon A/S 550, and it gets great reviews from Tire Rack (I think the only place to buy them). So many good reviews in fact, it just seems strange to me. Has anyone here installed them on your car (no matter what kind) and if so, how do you like them? I'm also looking at the KUMHO Escta ASX tire on Tire Rack... I really want to stay under about $135/tire.

Thanks,

Mike

I have always found the Tire Rack user reviews to be notably helpful. If nobody responds here, I would say you are pretty safe to go by what you hear over there.

Yeah, I think the reviews in general are mostly spot on. It just seemed odd that so many like this particualr tire.

I've got the OEM Bridgestone EL42's on the car now, and the reviews for those are accurate as well. Absolutely horrible tire!

Thanks man!

It seems like everyone hates the tires their car comes with unless their car is of a high performance nature. It sucks, but this is an area where a lot of manufacturers cheap out.

No doubt, I agree. Have no idea why Nissan/Infiniti would put such crappy (touring) tires on the G. Thing is, those Bridgestones are actually very expensive! For the size I'm looking at, the OEM is $199/tire!! Versus, <$135 for MUCH better alternatives. Go figure, hehe. I wouldn't give $10 for another OEM, much less $200!

Thanks Sean!

avon tires are made in the UK, and from what I understand a very well made underrated tire...

I personally have always been a Falcon/Nitto fan... With that said I'd get Pilot Sports though if they weren't $200+ each

Best tire I have ever used. Funny you should ask because I just sold my set of M500 summer tires today. I have a set of the M550 A/S on now and decided that was good enough for me with AWD that I did not need to keep switching with the seasons. But they are great tires. They are 100% quieter than my stock tires I had on, and the ride is so much better as well. Not to mention they handle great and stick to the road really well.

No problem! I only know one other person running them and he was the one that got me hooked on them. I think it is because they are only sold through TireRack.com in the states and people just have not heard of them. SubieSport Magazine also runs them and always has great reviews about them.
Oh, and I see your stock tires are Bridgestones...so where mine and you will notice a difference right away. I could not hear myself think while on the expressway because the Bridgestones were so loud.

Car & Driver just did an 11 member high-performance tire review http://www.caranddriver.com/article....ticle_id=10252

The Kumho Ecsta MX finished in last place. There were no Avon tires included in this article.

My 2 cents--I don't want to skimp on tires regardless of price since they play such an important role in braking, cornering, etc. The cost between a really good tire and a cheaper, poorer performing tire averaged out over several years doesn't really end up saving me money since vehicle control and safety are of primary importance to me.
I just don't get people who try to save a few bucks when the cost of a better performing tire over a "cheap" tire averages out to such a minimal cost increase when you calculate it over the actual lifetime of the tire.

So, I just put a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s on my Audi A4. They are much more of a performance summer tire than the Michelin Pilot Primacys that came with my A4's sports package. Their performance compared to the OEM Michelins are a night and day difference and well worth the price.

Yeah, I ran Kumho's once and they were the worst tire I have ever ran. I went to Toyo's after that and was not impressed with them either. But Avon's are not cheap tires by any means. They don't cost must compaired to others but you won't be dissapointed in them.

Good to know, I've always seen advertisements for them in C&D and always wondered about them. Another all season tire that seemed to get very high ratings, at a really good price is the Yokohama Avid 4Vs. I was looking at them for my car, I'm really not to happy with the road noise on some highways in my area.
