How do I remove the shift knob on an SL320 Benz?

I'm trying to help my father-in-law change the shift knob on his Mercedes SL320. Does anyone know how to remove the old one? The new wood-grain one came, surprisingly enough, with NO instructions on how to remove it. The end of the new one appears to have threads, but the old one won't turn.

Any ideas?

Ok....I'm going to answer my own question, now that I've been given the answer. For the car in question ('96 Mercedes SL320), you simply turn counterclockwise on the bottom part of the shifter, then pull straight up on the top part of the shifter.

Now back to detailing this beast before sunset, so I can go cruising with the top down!
