They do work with the tape deck and the radio. I know that the head unit is stock, but I'm not sure if the speakers are. I have a feeling that they guy I bought it from put all the stock parts back in when he sold it, since there is electrical tape on most of the speaker wires.
My question is, what do I need to look for, and what can cause something like this. I would prefer not to buy a new system right now, as its only an inconvenience to me.
Thanks for the help. Let me know if you need any more info.

Here's a pic of what they look like.

Another question. If I were to replace it with a new cd unit from Crutchfield, would I have to do something to fill in all that space, or do they have some sort of face that fills that area in?

I attatched a pic of the radio I just put into my car a week ago. The kit is the whole plastic square around the radio. The wiring is super easy now a days too. I think Crutchfield carries the easy wiring kits that just plug into your stock harness and then into the back of your radio. Then there is no need to splice anything at all. If not Crutchfield I know Circuit City carries them.

If you want, I can go get a picture of my Aurora's stereo so you can get an idea of what it will look like if you go for an aftermarket CD player.

Way too expensive and aftermarket sounds better anyway. I just picked up this Pioneer deck marked down from $315 to $199 at Circuit City-awesome sound, you can tailor the soundfield to your liking, 5 different adjustments for bass and treble, 3 loudness contours, etc. It even comes with a remote!
