Wheel issue

OK, a month or so ago I had new back tires put on my 01 Mustang Cobra. Well, I noticed a spot on the wheels (about 2" by 1") that just looked like some puddled up fluid and dirt...didn't think much of it until I went to wash it the following weekend and the clear on that spot rubbed right up

Not sure what it was or why it was on both rear wheels in almost the same size spot....but it was long enough from the time of the tire installation for me to know they were not going to do anything about it because at that point, anything could have happened.

Now the wheels are a "hypercoated" center piece with a polished lip (deep dish in the back) and painted black in the back of the wheel as opposed to polished as well.

So, what I was thinking (and what I wanted some advice on) was stripping the clear off the lips and the black paint on the inside of the wheel....then polishing them up.

I'm assuming acetone will strip the clear and black off the wheels, correct me if I'm wrong.
BUT, what is the best way to keep the acetone from getting on the "hypercoating"?

Any input would be great.

Maybe use some automotive tape on the parts you dont want to remove anything. 2 layers or so of tape then try using the chemical. I have no idea if the tape would hold up, but its an idea.

cgc- At the risk of sounding like a real buzz-kill, I'd have a pro do it. Refinishing wheels to a decent standard is trickier than one might think.

Na, you're not a buzz kill. I expected all kinds of responces both pos and neg. I know it's not just a walk in the park, and not just as strait forward as I would hope it would be....which is why I wanted some in put from those who have done it....

Hey, any issue almost is better than the dirt grime on my BMW. You know how those wheels are. I've let it sit way too long...
