Aside from gas, I am willing to bet that most day to day purchases (food, clothes, cabs, entertainment, and yes even rent) in Canada is comparable as a whole compared to the US as a whole. Sure, if you compare Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal or Calgary to Cheyenne or Reno, well then Canada is going to seem a lot more expensive, but I'm pretty sure New York, Miami, Seattle, LA, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, etc, etc more than make up for it.
