I'm going to be 19 in 3 weeks and I haven't had an eye exam before. I don't have any problems that I know of but I was wondering if I should get my eyes checked since a lot of people my age seems to need glasses or contacts.

If you have vision problems, the eye doctors will yell at you. I don't know why, but they talk to you like its your fault you have vision problems. All I think is "umm, sorry, do you want me to apologize to you? seriously..."

Crazy as it sounds, you don't necessarily know if you have improper vision, your brain tends to compensate for vision problems so an expert can check out your eyesight properly.
Your sight is just too valuable to gamble with, and on a really positive note, you're 19 and making a good decision about asking. You'll have peace of mind afterwards too.
Now, go and Get 'er done!

Teeth are fixable, eyes are one time only. I recently had an eye problem come up just after my yearly routine eye exam. Dr. referred me to a specialist, and it turns out it was something called central serous retinopathy. Fluid behind the retina causing a bubble area and a REALLY annoying "blind spot" almost centrally in my vision in my right eye. Happens mostly in men in their late 20s to 40s and is associated with stress. I could sell my stress by the bucket full lately and never run out. Anyway, it gets better with time and is improving lately.
The point of that rambling paragraph. Get your eyes checked. Just because you are young doesn't mean something can't go wrong. And now to make a dental appointment...

For most people, their vision doesn't degrade enough in a year's time where they would need to change their prescription. Plus most people can't afford or don't want to pay for 2 eyeglasses in one year's time. Even if your vision changes in 6 months, it wouldn't be that big of a difference compared to the costs.
Since this is your first time, your eye doctor will recommend getting a picture taken of the back of your eyes. I think it usually costs about $25 more, but for a first timer it's worth it because they'll be able to see if you have any more serious problems. This is more of a once ever few years type of deal, so you don't have to get it every year you go to the eye doctor.
I guess it all depends, but when you go to your optometrist, they'll tell you the recommended period and will also usually send you a reminder in a year's time.
