Re: Good hand guns

But speaking of S&W I am really digging their new M&P's! I got a hold of one at the gun shop and it felt really nice.

Don't have it anymore but one of my favorite handguns was a Stainless GP100 in .357 with a 6" barrel...

She has softened a bit over the years though and we do have a revolver in the house (in a good safe to keep it out of the wrong hands). We have a stainless Taurus 617 in .357 with a 2" barrel. It is small enough for the wife to handle and when loaded with .38 rounds doesn't kick too much for her.

My short list for the future is another GP100, another Springfield Armory 1911 and possibly a Sig P220 (partial to .45)

Re: Good hand guns

My wife is going to take a pistol safety class and I am going to take it with her. I want her comfortable with the gun as well.

Good idea. Heh heh, Accumulatorette really took to shooting, glad I had her learn from pros instead of trying to teach her myself.

We should of taken the class a while ago but the one we want to take is only offered once a month and it ALWAYS seems to fall on a weekend where we have stuff going on. Hopefully next month though.

Re: Good hand guns

I never thought that I would come to a car care forum and comment about guns. Here in Australia, we had a similar situation to the Virginia Tech horror. Ours was in 1996 at Port Arthur in Tasmania and 35 people were killed. The public got so angry about it, that our Government did something, and banned virtually all handguns, and most automatic and semi automatic long barreled shotguns and rifles.
Decent law abiding people handed in their guns, and rifles, under threat of prosecution for not doing so.
The one result from all this was that people who were once decent law abiding citizens were now considered as criminals if they wanted to keep any weapon at all.

You want to know the real funny thing about it all.

The only people who have guns now are the 'bad guys'.

Now that I've stood up and said my piece, I have to bend over again now.

Tony.

Thanks Tony! Thyat's what I have been saying for years. Statics show that in places where guns are banned or illegal to carry crime is usually higher. A bad guy knows, in those areas, chances of robbing or going after someone carrying a gun are very slim. In places where carry is legal the bad guys know their chances of robbing or going after the "wrong person" is higher.

Re: Good hand guns

Absolutely! And add to this the very ironic fact that areas with a lot of violent crime (such as urban areas) often have very strict gun laws.

It doesn't make any sense; but I don't want to make the OP's thread into one about gun control. If I'm not mistaken I don't think the mods around here like such discussions.

I think the recoil is brand dependent. My duty weapon is a Glock 21 and it makes a loud boom and shoots fire out the barrel but EVERYONE prefers the smoothness of the 45 compared to the muzzle flip of the 40.

Statistics about gun battles all alarmingly show that most occur within something like 3-7 feet (point and shoot distances)

Yeah, I agree...the "gentle shove" of some big-bores is a lot easier on me than some hotter smaller calibers. Even a really hotted-up ++P load in a 9mm can get your attention, let alone in a lightweight gun.

A standard 9mm *is* a nice gentle shooting load in a full-size, all-steel gun though. The old SIG 210 comes to mind for those who don't like the Colt/Browning models.

And everybody's different in how they experience this stuff too, my wife once said (referring to hardball in her .45 Govt. model): "recoil? Nah that's just muzzle flip". She's put a *lot* of rounds through hers, and it just never bugged her, even after hours on end non-stop.
