It's on the beefier side of small guns, but it takes magazines from my duty weapon (glock 21) and I like being ready for a loooong night.
It shoots smooth and is pretty consistently accurate. No gripes other than being wide.

I'm a glock fan myself. For a pistol that is reliable, easy to take down and clean, accurate AND affordable you just can't beat a Glock. 1911's are great, but there really is a big difference between the entry level and the more expensive models. I have a Kimber that is WAY WAY more accurate than I am. It's also a LOT harder to take down than the Glock. There are a couple other weapons that I have around, but if I'm reaching for one to ride through a bad section of town in or one to sleep on the nightstand....I grab my glock without a second thought. They just plain WORK.
To sum it all up (IMO): for just range shooting go with a NICE 9mm, .22, or if you can handle the cost of ammo the 1911 in .45ACP is my FAVORITE range gun. For protection, GLOCK is the way to go.

I love my Glock...I have a G32 in 357SIG. One hot round and very capable! I want a 45ACP for my next purchase, and am looking closely at the new XD45 (with 12/13 rounds). Would have certainly stayed with Glock, however I like the higher capacity of the new XDs.
I also own a couple 44 magnums...a S&W and a Ruger. Boy are those fun! My dad has a XD9 and it seems to be a great piece as well. Pretty accurate and fun to shoot. Although, he likes to think his Springfield is better than my Glock. hehe

Going to the M1911 or M1917 with .45acp ammo, gives back the stopping power. So if your requirement is for self-defense, consider a .45acp handgun. Otherwise, the above suggestions work. Glock has a .45acp version, Glock 21.

In my younger days before the wife and kids I had a pretty extensive handgun collection. My faves were a Springfield Armory 1911 that was breathed on by the Springfield Custom shop and a stainless Ruger GP100 .357 with a 6" barrell. I have to say that for home defense and plinking I would probably take a revolver over a semi-auto. In my case I was a far more accurate shooter with the bone stock Ruger GP100 than I ever was with the Springfield Armory 1911 even after the customizing.
Right now the only hangun I have is a Taurus 617. It is stainless, 2" barrel, 7 rounds in .357. I keep it around as it is pretty much a point and shoot handgun. I keep it in a safe fully loaded with .38 rounds as it is easier for the wife to handle with the lighter rounds. I have been in the market though for another Ruger GP100. I just seem to like the feel of those better.

I like the 9mm over the .45's just because it has less recoil and allows you to get back on target much quicker if need be. Also another huge factor is the ammo. I use reloads for the range and keep a magazine filled with Corbon DPX for defense. It seems to have gotten the best ratings for .380.

I use it for target shooting. Recreation and competition. I also use it for concealed carry. It is one of the best all around guns I have ever owned. And of all the rounds I have put through it, I have not had a misfire or jamb yet. The gun is flawless. Glocks are just about the perfect handguns. You might pay a little more for them, but they are worth every cent.
It has been metioned previously, but try out different Glock models. Most shooting ranges have differet Glock for people to rent. If you are doing lots of target practing, you should probably go with a 9mm. Just see what fits you the best.

You just never know what's gonna work best for *you*. My wife shoots her .45 Govt. Model with hardball better than her custom S&W revolver with .38 wadcutters Never know about how you'll respond to recoil/muzzleblast either..same weird example: recoil simply doesn't bother my wife, other than the need to, as she put it, "control the muzzle-flip".
