Not the best but very good quality. 9mm is a good bet because you can get ammo really cheap if you look around. That way it's not to expensive to go play with it. FWIW I abslutely love my beretta 92f I don't have one single complaint about this gun.

I have one I bought new, and I used to have a surplus one. The surplus one shot as good as the new one. I have small hands and the HP fits perfectly, but they would be fine for someone with larger hands too. I like them far better than the M-9 (Beretta 92F) I used in the military. They are single action, which I prefer to the more modern double action semis.
As far as ammo goes, I always have reloaded my own. At least half the fun of shooting, is designing and producing your own loads. So if you use store-bought or surplus ammo, you really miss out on a lot.

Accumulatorette was always quite reasonable about the whole firearms thing, but then she grew up in the South and had done some plinking when she was younger. Down there, it seems like *everyone* owns guns.
She isn't really interested in firearms per se, but she knew that with my interest in them she had to know about them, if only for a safety standpoint. And she knows that if anybody "bad" gets past the dogs, well, calling 911 won't solve the problem.
2001civicex- OK, glad you've taken the course. Taking a handgun-specific one would be a good idea too. Think about what your really want to do with the thing. IMO most guys buy something that's "too much gun" and then they a) never get good with it and b) don't even shoot it all that much. There's a reason why the used-gun market it always full of "only fired once" handguns

You can hit a gallon jug at 100 yds. with the G30, get a tritium front sight, put wolf springs in your mags. You can turn the holster over an shake it and the pistol will not fall out. I've had thousands of rounds through my G30 never had a problem, ask yourself, why do all the cops have them?

The Glock has many advantages.
- proven reliability
- easily available full capacity mags
- Won't rust (slide is tennifer treated, polymer frame)
- Tons of accessories available
- Simple operation and care. You can field strip a Glock in about 1 minute, and it only has 5 lubrication points. No special tools required, you can strip a Glock down to it's bare frame with a 3/32nd's punch, that's it.
Glock has outstanding customer service as well. Should anything go wrong with the gun Glock will take care of it. They'll even pay shipping both ways.
9mm/.40/.357 sig models can be had, new in box, for under $500. They run $489 in the Cincinnati area. .45acp/10mm models run a tad over $500, usually about $529 or so. Add for night sights, of course.
Good luck with your purchase.

I personally have owned or shot many of the guns listed in this thread and I would also say the Sig 228 is a great gun. You still can find them brand new in the US if you loko hard enough. I just bought a brand new one in August.

I found that if you want a good carry gun that you dont have to worry a whole lot if you get into shooting at some one is a Sig p232 I love that little sucker.

First and foremost, safety. Based on your posts, I think you already understand that.
If you are going the CCW route, you also need to consider some good/respected tactical training appropriate for your experience level. They should also cover you on some of the legal implications of carrying/concealing/using a weapon.
As long as your are safe and legal, then have fun with your choice.

Otherwise, another vote for Glock, and nothing but good things have been said about the Springfield XD series. The XD-9 9mm and XD-40 .40cal are the same price, so you need to choose what caliber you want based on what you're using it for. The .40 ammo isn't THAT much more expensive than 9mm though. The XD's have a combination of features similar to Glock, Sig, and the famous 1911.
IMO the best thing to do is go to the range and shoot several different guns, and see what fits you best as the others have mentioned. It helps if you have a friend/friends with a nice little collection, assuming they'll let you shoot some of their stuff.

Maybe because I carry it every day, and can shoot it very well. I am very biased toward Glocks. If you lived near me I would invite you out to shoot my collection. Gun choice is such a personal decision, rent many, shoot alot, goto gun ranges people like to let others shoot their guns to try them out. i would also suggest that you read some of the better gun mags. A good site to goto for Glocks is www.glocktalk.com, you can find some great info on Glocks and alot of other guns.

Kahr Firearms makes good pistols, my dad has one and its really nice, my only complaint is its a dual action, so it has a longer trigger pull than I like (i'm used to single action 1911). www.kahr.com the K40 or K9 are both smaller form factors, designed primarily for CCW. Not as accurate as 1911, but its also half the size, and it may just be me? Still can get 4-5 inch groups at 10 yards no problem. Only thing i dont like about the glocks is their price, way more than i would want to pay (for most of their stuff). K40 and k9 are both round 500 if i remember correctly.
Edit: Dont pay attention to the site prices, I know for a fact you can get them for a couple hundred less.
