Bumping this thread up, hows the quitting going patrick?

Just a lil bit of advice if you still haven't quit. By quitting, youll have more air to play with your kids, detail, and even do more things that smoking limits you to do now. As I have said before, running will give your brain the endorphins that give u a high that is helpful and good for those trying to quit smoking. Imo, give it your best will power. Just like detailing, its all effort and prep.

I dipped for a couple of months after stopping stoges. I didn't really like to dip, and replacing the normal smoke times (i.e. first thing in the morning, right after meals, etc.) with dip was getting old....so the dipping stopped soon after. I am one of the few who can now smoke when I drink or at a party and not want one the next day.

Patrick, go see your family doctor and ask for a drug called Zyban. It's awsome! It kills your cravings and you shouldn't gain any weight when you quit. Now, Zyban is also a class of anti-depressants, but it's marketed for stoping smoking. My spinal surgeon wouldn't cut me until I stoped smoking. I tried everything, he wrote me a script and I quit for a year and a half. I'm back smoking again though. Work stress sucks. I'm thinking about the hypnosis. Zyban is great, but you don't dare drink a beer on that stuff.

I'll vouch for Zyban, too. Two packs a day for more than 20 years - smoke-free for 6.

The thing about Zyban is that you pick a target date, like a birthday, and start taking it a couple of weeks before that date. You are not even trying to quit then, because you have two whole weeks to smoke all you want! But it just tapers off until you hit your target date and by then you just sort of forget to light up.

Of course, YMMV and some of why you forget to light up is that Zyban has a fairly strong effect on your brain chemistry.

But for me, the Zyban side effects tapered off after 2-3 weeks and I only had to take it for a couple of months. Better living through chemistry! I never would have been able to do it, cold turkey.

Patrick, my sister was hypnotized also. It worked! Her motivation to stop was the passing of our mother at the young age of 61 from guess what, lung cancer! She smoked a pack a day for more than 20 years. My sister cant even stand the smell of cigarettes let alone the actual smoke! If you can find someone to do it, I recommend it!!!

I tried to quit many many times, First time I tried to go cold turkey.....I just lost it, short temper with a shorter fuse and the guys at work went out and bought me a pack of smokes and said smoke them or don't come back. The second time I did the patch.......headaches that would hurt so bad I could not open my eyes, Zyban did not notice a big change but maybe it took off the edge. But the wake up call was

1. My father was diagnosed with C.O.P.D. (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), Emphysema, Conjunctive Heart failure and all stemming from smoking and welding all through his life.
and then

2. The dentist sent me to Oral Surgery to get a biopsy done for 4 palups (sp) in my mouth that MAY be pre cancer,,,,,,from smoking 30+yrs.

Not much more I can say but If I could turn back time the ONLY thing I would change would be not to smoke.

Wow, its been quite some time since i visited this thread! I amazed at all the ideas and stories that have surfaced, and recommendations. A little update, Im still at it, still wondering when I'll quit, still wondering why I havent. Theres a lot of stories in here, about families, and how thats reason enough, and it is reason enough. I just need some help doing it. I tried Wellbutrin, (I think the same class as Zyban), it did remove some of the urge, but never really got me over the hump. I wonder if I'll need a medical crisis to set me free. I even have a friend in the Hospital with cancer, it actually started in his knee, and they found some in his lungs, not a good prognosis as everyone can imagine. Hes smoked for over 30 yrs now.....Then theres the latest Californiastopsmokingaddcampaign that shows men morphing, simulating cancer cells rejuvinating. California has a very strong stop smoking campaign going on, its reall incredible the imagination some have. And once again, it makes me think, cancer does not discriminate........

I wanted to add one to the list for people trying to quit. Its called "How to Quit Smoking Without Willpower or Struggle". This guy has an interesting story of how he quit and developed a system that supposedly doesnt take willpower. You have to order it, its not free although he started out offering it for free on usenet a few years ago. His site is quite interesting reading. I deliberated for about a week and just ordered the e-book version for myself.
