baseballover1- Heh heh, LOL about the coach hating you

And heh heh#2- "lazy" and working out don't exactly go together, but at least you're doing something.

Best succinct advice I can think of: Do squats, chins/pull-ups, and benches (I only include the latter because everybody loves 'em these days). Do 'em hard and ingest a lot of protein.

Re: Lets all Diet & get in shape

As for those curls, I hope you are doing 5 sets of 10 and not 50 at a time? No more than 10 per set. You want to get some serious hypertrophy going on, and you're not going to get that with 50 at a time. Make sure you use strict form as well.

Re: Lets all Diet & get in shape

[Heh heh, old-guy sorta-rant follows ]

Hypertrophy means your muscles growing bigger (the dictionary is your pal ).

Most muscles (calves being the exception) respond best to being under load for 20-70 seconds, and if you do a movement right that means you don't do all that many reps. (Regulars here are probably glad I over-simplified that instead of repeating my lecture on fast/slow-twitch muscle fibers )

Don't do stuff "when you feel like it", do things for a specific reason as part of a well thought-out plan to achieve a specific goal.

Keep meticulous workout records so you can study/evaluate/plan your progress. You *cannot* gauge your progress by looking in the mirror, this stuff happens too gradually/subtly for that.

[OK, end of old-codger rant ]

Seriously, it takes intelligent thought, self-discipline, and very hard work to get/stay in shape. It's worth it. Trying to work out without studying the how/why of the topic is like trying to do anything else without a firm understanding of what's what. And just like anything else, you get out what you put in. And yeah, I really *do* remember what it was like to be your age

Re: Lets all Diet & get in shape

Well Accumulator, I haven't read all 111 pages of this thread cuz I didn't know about it til like page 109, so I don't know if you've posted about the fast-twitch/slow-twitch fibers a lot, but it really is important to know. I find that it is much easier for me to get bigger and stronger now because I know so much more about the science of bodybuilding. I'm sure Accumulator knows MUCH more than I, since he's older (no offense). You really do need to spend some time online and learn about how it all works, then you will understand why you do certain things and will learn better how to workout to get the results you want.

Re: Lets all Diet & get in shape

hockeyplaya13- Yeah, if people approached getting in shape the way they approach other topics they'd probably do a lot better There's just *so* much BS out there and without knowing how the body works it's hard to know what to do/not.

It's hard for me to remember what I've posted before, and since nobody's gonna read through this whole thread some things might bear repeating now and then

Yeah, understanding the fast/slow-twitch fiber thing can be very beneficial..."won't jogging make it impossible to grow big legs?"; "why shouldn't I do sets of 50 pushups?"; "don't you do super-high reps for abs?"...all sorts of things become obvious when one understands what's really going on

Re: Lets all Diet & get in shape

Just ran into this thread. I happen to be on a diet, since about october. Started at 215lbs and i'm now down to 195lbs. I'm 5'9", 20 years old, and i seem to have high body fat and low lean mass so at 195 i still look quite fat.....

I'm sticking with it. Currently eating about 1800 cals a day and i'm gonna start exercising a little once march hits. I also NEED TO LIFT to put some mucle on this body, or at the very least retain what i have now...

Re: Lets all Diet & get in shape

xmx250- That's not many calories. I'd rather see you do more exercising and eating more (of the right stuff). But congrats on getting your weight down, that's a big improvement so you're off to a good start.

You might oughta get your body composition figured, many places offer a quick caliper-type test for around $10. Find out how much of your weight is really fat so you can make the right plan.

Doing regular cardio and weight work will do wonders for your overall health, not just the bodyfat thing.

Re: Lets all Diet & get in shape

I am 6'1 and weigh 142.. Jesus.

It's genetic. I need to be exercising, though. Running is doable and good for my leg and hip (plates and pins, surgical muscle trauma.) I worry about knees, but maybe at 140 I shouldn't.

When I started getting serious about being in shape I was only 125 lbs at 5' 10", so you're probably not all that far from where I was all those (23) years ago.

Short version: The more in-shape you are the better your quality of life. More muscle is better than less, cardiovascular health is critical, and what you eat is probably 50% of the whole thing.

Given the sound of your past medical history, I'd think it'd be wise for you to *really* work at your fitness

Knees- building up your upper leg muscles (especially your hamstrings and vastus medialis) can work wonders, solved my knee problems 100%.

Re: Lets all Diet & get in shape

Yea, I know how the genetics play out. I was 6'0 and 135 a few years ago. Since then I have grown an inch and hit the weights hard and am not about 183 at 6'1. And like Accumulator said, what you eat plays a HUGE role in your health. Just working out isn't enough.

Re: Lets all Diet & get in shape

I like being skinny (and the lady likes it too) but I know from experience I can be a lot more "in shape" without changing that one bit.

I was most in shape when I was being forced to exercise for PT after my accident, soon maxing out all the machines and able to pedal and treadmill till I got bored of it. The boredom is the issue, I find it impossible to be entertained by an ipod long enough to do myself any good, and I can't stand television. BLARG! Maybe I can make healthy cooking my next obsession.
