Glad to hear you've made so much progress
Yeah, I'm a real broken record about coming up with a routine that you can stick with day-in, day-out (or more like *year-in*, year-out). It's a lot easier to stay in shape than it is to *get* in shape

Currently, my best lifts so far are back squat 265x3, front squat im going to try to max on sunday at 245, and my military press overhead is 165 max. Other lifts Ill list later, but these are the ones I currently focus on along with power cleans.
Off days I do either of the following: kettlebells, jump rope with boxing, hiit, or swimming.
Keys to me staying injury free this time around are: dynamic stretching before workouts, foam rolling, and a stretching program at least after exercise and an additional two sessions of stretching per week to maintain/gain flexilibility. I also get much more sleep now then before, so Im gaining strength but not size still(calorie thing of course, but im not really feeling it for endulging 5000 cals a day right now).
Ill try and update my status when i come on here again.
Good luck to everyone else.
Aaron

Gee...this thread stays dead for months at a time. Wonder how everyone else's workouts are going (Oh Danase....where are you Bob? )
I've added a little more grip work and got a Gerard Trap Bar that I'm using for stuff like Romanian deads. I'd working the front of my calves with the DARD (Dynamic Axial Resistance Device) more often in an attempt to prevent shin splints. The additional dogs have me doing a *LOT* of walking, but I dunno if it matters one way or the other
All the dog-time has prompted me to make my (weight) workouts a little shorter/more efficient. I'm doing fewer overall sets but keeping the intensity up there on the ones I *do* do. Doesn't seem to be having any negative effects, but like most routines I know I'll have to change it up after a while.
I noticed that the StairMaster had sunk down into its pad to where the pivots where rubbing a little on the pad. I repositioned it, figuring that the binding was probably making it harder than normal. SURPRISE Moving it freed up the pivots all right, but it made the workouts *harder* as the greater number of steps-per-minute greatly overwhelmed the difference in resistance. Took about two months for me to get used to the difference and the added intensity was quite welcome (on the PT4000 we have, at level 9 I can't get it to go any faster- level 10 just increases the amount of time spent at the fastest pace and increasing the time isn't the same as going faster).
I was gonna get a Precor Elliptical but the aerobics room ceiling height isn't sufficient

Quit eating [junk], exercise, and the rest of it'll take care of itself. I wouldn't worry about how much you weigh, just about how much of it is fat.
At your age, getting older will do a lot. You'll gain muscle as you get more physically "mature" as long as you do the diet/exercise thing properly.
FWIW, I'm 5' 10" too. | |

My incline bench for sets of 5 reps is 185 so far without reaching failure. Hopefully ill be able to reach 200 and keep going. Military presses still suck, have to find a way to get around my weakness(1rm=165).

IMO that only really matters if you're gonna be competing in Olympic lifts, twenty years from now all that'll matter is whether you kept in shape or not.
Just avoid revisiting that injury...I'd hate for you to end up with something permanent. When I had that lower back (spinal erector) problem I couldn't do normal squats for months on end; I was starting to wonder if I'd be doing the hip-belt squats for the rest of my life! These days I just keep the weight reasonable and do more reps...higher-rep squats are beneficial in a whole lotta ways anyhow.

Besides, I really reevaluated what I was doing and just focused on my form for squatting(front and back) and improved my deadlifting technique. Along with some crosstraining and a bit of flexiblity work(a couple days a week, dynamic stuff everyday), I feel much more confident and am prepared physically and mentality for the heavier weights.

I will say that I get a big cardio effect from higher reps of heavy movements though, nothing else seems quite the same. But yeah, form is the most important thing IMO, especially for movements like the squat. And yeah, flexibility work gets overlooked by too many people.
