One of our latest additions is a 4-year-old male rescue who'd obviously never been exercised; over the last ~two months I've packed a *lot* of muscle on him (added ~25% of his original bodyweight as per the last weigh-in), and he looks like a completely different dog

Strength is still doing decent. I recently front squatted atg 175x5 reps olympic style and deadlifted 315 for 5 reps(that was easy). Other than that, currently working on my overhead bb press(no jerk for the time being) for now which is at 135x5 reps.

Sounds like you're pretty much recovered if you're doing the squats and deads again.
With the new dogs I'm getting an increased amount of cardio

Handle is 1.5 inches which easily improves your grip, swings are different with a kettlebell than a dumbbell due to the handle and weight distribution, and they are a challenge.
I got mine from muscledriverusa.com since they have the cheapest price and great quality without killing yourself on shipping. Mainly using this kettlebell for speed and conditioning on my off days.

I myself got serious about getting in shape about a year ago. Started off at 185, i'm at about 154 now. (I'm about 5'10 or so) Still trying to shave off a few more pounds off fat to get that "six pack" look.
The recipe for success is simple - eat healthy and exercise. I try to work out 5 times a week, about an hour each workout. I do your pretty standard workout - hitting the core muscle groups.
As for eating, it takes a lot of self discipline. I still drink sodas, one or so a day, but now I drink diet coke (might taste funny but you get used to it). I eat A LOT of chicken and take protein shakes twice, often three times a day. Aim to eat 6 meals a day. More, smaller meals are a lot better than eating one or two large meals.
In the end, you just have to be focused on your goal and make the sacrifices. Fight off those mcdonalds cravings! Trust me, once you change your lifestyle and do it for a while, it becomes the natural thing and you won't think twice about doing it. Although, i allow ONE meal a week to eat anything i want, gotta have something to look forward toO!
I could post pics, but i'm sure most of us are guys and i'm a guy, so yea lol

If you don't mind me asking, what size pants and shirt did you where when you were 185, and what size to you where now? I am also 5' 10" and am heavier then you, my goal weight is about 185. Just curious what I might look like when I get there (I have been overweight my whole life so I have now idea...)

-Frank | Some of this is a recap of stuff from a zillion pages ago As we're the same height, perhaps my stats will help a little: [very long-winded post follows...]
I'm 5'10, age 47.5, and I'm in the low-mid 170s, which is "normal for me" and I don't vary by more than a few pounds year-in-year-out. When was age 25 I only weighed 125 lbs and I couldn't see my abs because of my bodyfat. I was 150 going into my 30s. Creatine got me to 155. Squats and heavy lifts got me to where I am now and I've stayed at ~173 for a long time.
I lift almost every day. I do (hard but brief) cardio 2-3 times a week. I eat pretty "clean" but I do eat fast food/etc. when I want it.
I have clearly defined abs with some visible vascularity over them, every other muscle is clearly defined too. Any lighter and I look too lean ("drawn" or gaunt) and/or much less muscular; any heavier and my bodyfat goes up into the double-digits and I look a little softer/less defined than I want to.
I wear size 42 coats which are a little snug in the chest/shoulders and my size 32-33 pants are a little big in the waist. Hard to say about shirt sizes as I have my cut-and-sewn/dress shirts made, but I take an XL T-shirt, a L polo and these are very form-fitting around my lats.
I always encourage people to consider their body composition (muscle/bone vs. fat) and shoot for being lean and muscular while letting the actual *weight* sort itself out. Work towards getting enough bodyfat off that you can see your abs, it really is a good yardstick. What the scale says can be deceiving if you're gaining muscle.
What the final "I'm happy with it" weight will be depends on the individual, but I bet that you could carry 185 very well if it's lots of muscle with little fat. If you don't like how you look at 185, adjust your diet (calories in) and/or your exercise (calories burned, muscle built). I'd love to be 185, but only if I could keep the muscle/fat ratio I have now, and I simply can't pull that off.
Just keep working out and as long as you're getting stronger you're doing great; keep eating right and as long as you're getting closer to seeing your abs you're doing great with that too. Do cardio for overall health and to burn extra calories, and try to constantly improve your performance there too. And remember that this stuff can take a lot of time, but every day counts.

-Frank | I'm in the same boat Frank, I'm around 5'10 and I'm pushing 230 now, looking to drop to 200 or less. Right now I'm a 38 waist, XL shirt, but back when I was 185, I was a 34/L. I've always been a pretty boxy kid in the legs/rear, so you might get away with a 32.

Since Sept I too have changed my lifestyle to get into better shape - i was starting to get a growth in the belly region...
I noticed I was sweating, puffing and struggling to finish a detail, which was not normal for me. I thought it was time to do something about this state of affairs. What motivated me to do something? Well... it was one man.
I was watching TV one day in Sept and there was a programe about a guy here in Melbourne, Australia called Tommy Hafey, who was a very successful Aussie Rules League coach in the late 60's, early 70's.
Anyway, this gentleman is 76 years old and has the body of a 30 year old !!! I'm not kidding he looked fantastic and it kinda made me think...
If he can wake up every morning every day of the year and go for a run on the beach, then for a swim and then do a couple of thousand push-ups & sit-ups, what was stopping me from just doing a handful???????? He does it every day of the year without fail, eats healthy and is a tea toteler.
So that was the spur my mind needed to make a start and I'm so glad I did. I've lost 26 kg's since last Sept, have heaps of energy and enjoy my workouts. I mix it up with some light weights, heavy weights, bicycling, walking etc... I've made exercise a part of my lifestyle rather than something I had to do to get fit and healthy...
So I wanted to thank all those who've contributed to this LONG thread as its been a great help and hope maybe to inspire others to give it a fair go if they are procrastinating.
