I tilled half the areas soil using one of those garden claws, and began laying the sod down. Tilled area is very lush and green. Other half is sort of yellowing and the blades are thinning a bit. Will proper watering and lawn feeding bring the yellow back to the green it used to be?
Just water the heck out it, it will come back. You may have to spot sod some pieces later.

Re: Lawn Care

Ya... sod needs a lot of water and should follow a schedule - say for the first few days of week 1, water twice a day (1/2" each time) and then go to once a day for the remainder of week 1. In week 2, water 6 out of the 7 days and on week 3 out of 7 days and then begin to scale back so you are receiving 1" of water once a week. I would wait about 3 -4 weeks before mowing to ensure the roots have gone into the ground and are well established. You can pull up one corner of a peice and if it doesnt pull up, your good to go.

Re: Lawn Care

The sod is almost done setting into the soil after 2 weeks. But it just occurred to me that after it began to yellow, not tilling the soil is the reason for it. Is this true?
For two days straight before installing the sod I watered the soil to soften it. But I guess more needed to be done.

Re: Lawn Care

How hard was the soil? The yellowing may sounds like the roots didnt take. Someone mentioned in a prev post to cut the yellow spot and replace it with another piece.

Re: Lawn Care

The soil was fairly soft because i've watered it for about 2 days prior to laying the sod down. But I too think that the yellow areas came like that because they didnt root into the soil. I hope i dont have to sod the areas again because its about 1/4 of lawn. approx. 150 sq. ft. yellow grass which is a lot.

Re: Lawn Care

There's a new lawn forum that's much better than Gardenweb IMO. In fact a lot of the old Gardenweb members are there!

A beautiful lawn begins here... Lawnsmarts.com

West Michigan got several inches of rain the last couple weeks. Fortunately our area was not affected by the floods. My lawn looks better than ever! The importance of adequate watering has never been clearer to me.

Re: Lawn Care

Welp, my lawn is doing much much better. Blades looks very healthy, and it looks like a plush carpet or somethin. Just need to get my lawn mower in for maintenance and sharpening.

Re: Lawn Care

Lawn... I don't know, but we have 3.5 acres to mow

Tractor... Ariens GT-18, 48" cut I think and a 18HP Briggs I think. My dad bought it back in 1983 (2 yrs before I was born) and she still runs great.

Push... Craftsman - probably 13 years old or more

Trimmer... Craftsman Weedwacker - about 13 years old

Despite the abuse of 3.5 acres, we take really good care of our stuff and usually get a good long life out of what we buy. Plus I want to avoid needing to purchase something new, as the stuff made today is CRAP compared to the quality of some of the stuff we have that's 10-15 years old and still running like new. Tractor wise, Deere X series is the only thing I could buy that's heavy duty enough for the abuse our tractor goes through, especially considering the VERY hilly terrain.

Re: Lawn Care

We have tall fescue here in the communist state of Maryland. It is not the nicest looking grass, but when it greens up it looks like dark astro-turf.

I am getting a new TOL Honda Self Propelled next spring.

As for fertilizer, you guys should really try some good organic stuff. I fired my lawn company and decided to go organic and do it myself. Best lawn decision I have made. They make some great organic stuff that is much healthier for your kids and pets.
