How many of you are bonded and insured or even have a business license doing work part time? Trying to figure this all out as I already work 60+ hours a week with my normal job. I'm figuring i'll be able to fit in a max of 2 cars a week for intensive work and I don't feel it's worth my time to get a license or get insured. I'm planning on storing vehicles overnight in my driveway in a very nice neighborhhod blocked by two other cars when i'm not doing mobile work.

Feel free to chime in.

If your touching someone else's vehicle and expecting them to pay you for that service regardless of how many hours you put in a week you most defiantly should at least have the liscence and insurence to cover it.

Who would I call regarding getting insured? Would it be State Farm as I already am dealing with them?

And doesn' the prework agreement cover your butt basically?

Put it this way, at any level of detailing you are working on someone else's investment. whether its a $1000.00 investment or a $300,000.00 It doesn't matter, one mistake and its a costly one. you need a way to cover this. unless you got deep pockets get insurance. So what i;'m saying is get insurance its a must. Next your working without a liceanse? This would make your operation illegal most likely you won't get caught, but what happens if you would? Are you prepared to put any reputation you have built up on something so cheap to get? Next remember there are professionals out there that get bad rep's because of fly by night guys. So what it boils down to is are you gonna be a good example or a bad example?

I realize what your saying... I'm definatly going to be a good example, but as I don't have time to run a legit side business all I can do is a side job here or there. When I work out the taxes, license and insurance I'm sure I'll barely be making minimum wage. So it doesnt seem logical to even start unless I can get x number of cars in a week to make a profit.

well grabbing a DBA is about $10 in most states. That takes care of the liscense. You're local courthouse will suffice. I go through State Farm myself for my business insurence they have really great rates. Tell them what you're doing and I'm sure they'll whip up something for you that fits your work schedule and needs

Unfortunatly its $300 for a license for my town and running a business out of the house is illegal... gonna have to work it out for mobile detailing, but how working a vehicle and having insurance in my back yard is going to work might be tricky.

Register your name with the County you live in. That should take care of that.
Then get the insurance. You should have that. I don't know what license you guys are talking about. I'm in the same boat as you. Maybe 3 or 4 cars at the MOST per week is my limit. I'm not getting any license. I just registered my name and got the insurance to cover me.

Thats it.

I'm now waiting on my state farm agent for a quote... lastly... is it in my best interest to become a LLC? I have no overhead other than the money i've spent on supplies and tools...

Got the quotew yeaterday... State farms great $500,000 coverage on the cars and $2000 on my equipment only is going to cost me $45 a month... thanks for the info guys.. im going that route.

LLC protects your personal assets in the event you get sued. Yes, it is worth it.
