hi everyone, i've been lurking for a while but never really found a need to post because everything that i needed could be found already on the forums.

anyway, i am thinking about doing an online business; selling a few products here and there. i have a pretty good design going but i am pretty troubled with the online ordering process. does anyone have any experience with this type of thing (mostly the coding of the shopping cart/check out)? do they have shopping cart applications that you can just download and upload onto your server or do they require much more coding?

www.candypress.com is a low cost shopping cart that works very well. You'll need a gateway account..authorize.net?

I have a friend that owns his own business doing this and knows the fee structure and how it all works. PM me and I'll get you his email.

You will have monthly charges depending on how much you sell. Know what they are before setting it up. It will help you figure what you need to mark up on your products.

We use Quickbooks Pro as well for receipts and sales for taxes and so forth.

these are the most popular ones.

They are easy to install and require little to no programming. These shopping cart are very bland. You can search of skin to buy Ecommerce Templates | Template Monster or modify it your self which require coding.
Some hosting service also offer free shopping cart, but you can't do any modfication.

Joomla/Virtuemart sounds like your best bet.
